How do you know its not sperm and eggs?
egg.jpg

Laurel,

I just don't know what to say:

Let's see,
Plankton Bloom does not have sperm and eggs
Larger marine life would be in clouds if it were suspended not ubiquitous
No catchup so Phil's concept doesn't work
This is Malibu and that is what they use hot tubs for
Not enought botox

Therefore, whale snot

Finally, something I haven't seen in many months; Great conditions!!! The ocean was glassy and we found good visibility near shore.

Date:4/23/05
Dive Location:Wrecks of the Jenny Lynne and Avalon
Time: 9:57-12:26
Bottom Time: 24 and 25 minutes
Max Depth: 141 and 71
Vis:20 feet on the Jenny Lynne and over 40 feet on the Avalon. Best vis I've ever seen there.
Wave height:0
Temp at depth:50F
Comments: I've been looking for the Jenny Lynne since it sank off Marineland last year. Ross found it last week, so we made our first jump on it today. After one minute on the bottom I noticed water in my housing, so up I went. No pictures today. :(
I dropped back down just in time to find my buddies leaving the wreck. I looked around for a minute, then joined them. I need to go back soon!
After searcing in vain for the Southern Light that sank last month off Pt. Vicente, Ross suggested the Avalon. I'm glad he did. I have quite a few dives there and have never seen conditions the way they were today. 40 feet+ vis, several Lingcod, including a big'n and a dive bombing sea lion.
The wind waited until we were back in the harbor before blowing hard, so we had a great time above and below the surface. On our way back a bi-plane also dive bombed us, banking within a couple hundred feet of Ross' boat. The pilot waved as he went by. :D

Very cool!

I hope that this will be the first in a long line of posts about how great the conditions are getting.

You are overanalyzing. :goldfish: + springtime = sperm and eggs (only not as big as the ones Phil posted!)

Dive #1
Date: 4/23/05
Dive Location: Casino Point Dive Park, Catalina
Time: 8:38AM
Bottom Time: 47 min
Max Depth: 85 ft
Vis: 40-50ft
Wave height:0-1ft
Surge: Almost non-existent
Temp at depth: 61
Surface Temp: 64

Comments: On this dive, Scott (Captain Marvel) and I swam out to the end of the park to drop down on the Sue-Jac wreck... was Neat to see, and caught a few bugs peeking out and taunting us... The blue banded gobies were out in hoards today... Had to have come across 100 of them at least.. At about halfway through the dive we happened to run into "Oscar 2" (Dr. Bill informed me that it is believed that the original "Oscar" had a fight with a boat propeller and lost) and he decided to follow us for a good 10 minutes of our dive.... When we exited the water I noticed that my computer (Suunto Vyper) began a 2nd dive although we were out of the water.... for some reason it locked in at 18ft and stayed that way for most of the day....

Dive #2
Date: 4/23/05
Dive Location: Casino Point Dive Park, Catalina
Time: 10:35AM
Bottom Time: 53 min
Max Depth: 71 ft
Vis: 30-40ft
Wave height:0-1ft
Surge: 1-3ft
Temp at depth: 61
Surface Temp: 64

Comments:With everything but the bottom timer and NDL time working, we headed in for our second dive.. This time it was a little trickier because I had to subtract 18 feet to the depth gauge to get a "real" reading.... We swam out to the Kismet and glass bottom boat and descended almost right on top of them.... Caught sight of a big scorpion fish who was VERY well concealed with his natural camo.... Visibility was reduced a little on this dive due to the surge picking up a little bit, and LOTS of open water students in the park....This dive we saw all the usual marine life, but just happened (by accident) to see a decent sized octopus... he was not in the mood to come out and play though.... Oscar 2 decided to make an encore and come visit us again for a short while....

While down on this dive, (because my computer had started an hour long dive on the surface hah) it went into decompression mode.... While out of the water the computer continued the dive (now at around 230 minutes of bottom time) and myself, Dr. Bill, and Captain Marvel had a laugh at how I was decompressing on land.... after 430 minutes of total run time, I finally got the battery out and replaced it in the computer and all was well.... just goes to show you how important back up equipment is....

Dive: Night - Aliso Beach -middle reef
Vis 3-12ft
max depth: 35
Avg 25ft
Bottom time:45 min
temp 58
lots of surge 6-7ft shorebreaks, and monster backwash

Sounds like I missed out in catalina. Glad you had a good time seth!
I actually had a fun night dive tonight. I went with a few from the fullerton dive club. Interesting reef structure with shelfs and crevaces. I caught 4 lobster before freeing them, (practice). Lots of sting rays and tiny halibut. The dive started with low vis, but got better through the dive. very interesting dive site. Must be fun with calm surf. gnarly entry, lost half our group before the dive started (crazy shorebreaks and backwash). Surgy but fun!

La Jolla Shores, Cabezon Cruiser (Night Dive)
Max Depth: 135 feet
Temp at depth: 50 degrees
Temp in shallows: 55 degrees
Bottom Time: 60 minutes
Visibility: 30 feet + at depth
Waves: 1-2 footers
Tide: almost high tide

We kicked out to the Vallecitos buoy and dropped down into 25 feet of water. We kicked to the canyon headed along the walls south and west until we headed down to 130ish. The landscape is very barren with the bottom patching into mounds down the hill. We swam a while and I thought we were going to miss the cruiser, but a few moments later we saw rockfish hanging out which meant the cruiser was nearby. We continued swimming and the bow of the Cabezon Cruiser came into view. We didn't have a ton of bottom time remaining, but we saw the usual suspects hanging out on the Cruiser. I got a close-up picture of a brown rockfish which was tagged by the DFG for their tracking project so I will forward that picture to them. We slowly swam up the steep hill above the Cruiser, seeing several octopi peeking down at us. One octopus puffed up and changed colors and decided to flee before we got near him. We watched him scurry out of site. We saw several horn sharks from 6 to 12 inches long. We continued up to the shallows and explored. The midshipmen were out on maneuvers, deployed all over the canyon. We must have seen up to 25 midshipmen. We saw a few round rays, some crabs, a nice Hermissenda crassicornis on a reed, a sole market squid digging into the ground, target shrimp, some Turbots and Halibut, and more. The visibility was 30-40 feet in spots. I'm sure we could have seen more had it been a day dive. It was 50 degrees at depth and 55 in the shallows!

Thanks for the report and pics Sean. Always enjoy them. We went out this morning. Report to follow after the night dive. 4 foot giant sea bass at 28fsw and within arms reach right at the drop in point. Made the whole dive.

Agree it was a great dive and it was a privelage to see that GSB swimming right up underneath us and slowly away. Visibility was very good in the canyon and we weren't even that deep :). The nice dive was tainted by reports of that GSB being speared/killed in the preserve, could have been the same one we the one we saw ... could have been another. Either way its a shame.
