In my PADI basic course, they overweighed me and made me do fin pivots but never dealt with adjusting your weighing to fine-tune buoyancy.

Thats 100% to do with a crap instructor and 0% to do with the agency.
 
By the way, Mitchell, thanks for caring enough to make sure you have buoyancy control mastered before you tackle photography. Too many new divers crash into the reef or other divers trying to get photos before they have the basics of diving mastered. It's the underwater equivalent of backing off a cliff while trying to frame a shot!
 
Well, not harming the reef or anything else is first priority
 
before you pick up a camera and maybe do a underwater digital photography course, maybe it would be a good idea for you to also undertake a peak performance buoyancy adventure dive or specialty! this short course aims to vastly improve your buoyancy skills up to a level where you would be easily comfortable enough to start using your underwater camer
