Why would they want to prevent people from 'going deep' when shore diving? An Al80 is hardly equipment for major deep diving!

Unless you take 3 or 4 of them.

10. It is recommended that when renting scuba cylinders to open water divers that only one tank per certification card be given. It is recommended that when renting scuba cylinders to a certified and insured scuba instructor that only one cylinder per student is given and proof of teaching status & liability insurance of the instructor be shown.

Ya know, the guidelines say one tank per certification card, not per diver... :hm:

My perspective comes from shore diving 4 trips to Bonaire. Lots of shore diving where AL80's are standard & nobody cares if we go 'deep.'

My only diving in Grand Cayman as a 2-tank boat dive on a cruise excursion, so I've not shore dove there.

Looks like the risks of a newbie having an OOA emergency would be higher with a smaller amount of air going on.

Richard.

For "open water divers" ..................

Joking aside, I did a great shore diving trip to Cayman earlier in the year. Took advantage of Divetechs unlimited Nitrox deal. Added a few deco tanks and had a blast.

It is CITA ( Cayman Islands Tourism Association) that have set up some of these rules, Dive operators must be a member to operate. Solo diving in the Cayman Islands is ILLEGAL! You cannot do it. The shops that do not allow outside tanks do this because it is thier property, that they paid for, pay to insure, pay to maintain. This is a business, and making money keeps the doors open. Now, you can take your tanks in AFTER business hours, and there are also public access areas and dive sites, such as Spotts Reef, where you can take your own tanks at any time.

Solo diving in the Cayman Islands is ILLEGAL! You cannot do it.

That is completely inaccurate.

Solo diving on a "wall" contravenes CITA's "Guidelines". They are not "law". They govern only what a dive op which belongs to CITA may allow its customers to do. They do not bind individual divers in any way. And, they apply only to "wall" dives (I know, I know, I don't find it very logical either).

Alex, You are absolutely correct! I was wrong in my statement. I researched it today and could hardly find any mention of solo diving in the CITA book except barely a mention with reference to wall diving. I appologize for my inacurate statement.

Pulling out the bride and my gear in anticipation of our Sunday arrival as we "speak". Water temps going to be in the low 80's next week or did Tomas stir up some colder water?

Thanks.

Sunset House, along with other fine dive establishments on island have banded together to give visiting divers a discount on their great shore diving product. With easy entry points, a place to park vehicles, change and in most places get something to eat and drink after your dive, or inbetween those surface intervals.
