Actually there is nothing really special about getting into the water in winter other than common sense. Check the area and make sure you its not super icy and make sure you have a safe way to get in the water. On the dive for the video we had to move a big chunk of ice to allow us safe access to get into the water without having to try and scramble over ice.
If there is no good/safe access to the water then choose a different dive site.
I generally try to avoid the river once the water reaches 32F as all your gear is just too likely to fail at those temperatures. For us the water was above freezing so less chance of reg and inflator failures.
