It's a learners permit. If they start off doing 10-20 foot beach dives, move on to some 30-40 ft reef dives, they should be fine. The current OW course is a starting point, not a final destination.

They should be fine? Really? I'm sorry, but I just don't see this to be the case. Although I do agree that an OW certification is the begining, not the destination, an OW certification is a certification to dive, not an permit to learn. Additionally, an OW certified diver who did not learn the basics of gas mgmnt., etc. is only fooling himself (or herself) by slowly delving into deeper and/or longer dives. If a diver can't figure out how to manage you breathing gas for a 20 minute, 20 fsw dive, how will they ..."be fine" slowly descending into deeper dives?
