I know at least ONE hard core cave diver who uses these flip-up fins. He's a Scubaboard member too.

There are a few SB members who are big fans of the ole' flip fins, yours truly included.

It may only be a few steps, but it is pretty damn useful when you are staggering to the edge of the boat under a barrel load of sling bottles.

Locking mechanism is pretty well made, although it can pop out - but the weaker sweep is the upstroke, so you need an unlucky combination of factors to actually pop it out (at which time you need to pop it back in again).

The unexpected problem I once had was getting line snagged in the "hinge".
That is the sort of problem that you only let happen once (and a good diver probably would have foreseen anyhow).
