Thanks for the input. The rescue course was on my list of things to do right afterd I finish the Nitrox course this fall. H.adn't thought about it,but now Im leaning towards a sausage with line and the rescue couse as the next purchases (lots of diving is just a given :)
 
These are the most useful items, IMO. This would be for drift diving in the Ocean. There may be other items, depending on what type of diving you are doing:

Rescue Course $150
Safety Sausage $20
Storm Whistle $15
Small Knife $15
Small Flashlight $30

A DAN membership at $99 per year is also a good idea, but just hope you never have to use it.
