Hello,

I just got into scuba this year and have done my OW cert. AOW is set for June. My good friend told me about DIR and it is a great philosophy/methodology. I'm looking to connect with other DIR dives in the Durham Region (Ontario, Canada). Are there any DIR clubs around Durham or Toronto?

I've started piecing gear together and would appreciate some first hand advise.

So far the gear i've got is as follows;

Hollis S-Series 25lb wing / SS backplate
Hollis DC1 with 2 212 Hollis 2nd stage regs (7ft and 2ft hoses)
Mask/fins/snorkal/wetsuit

Ill be doing a lot of cold water diving since I live in toronto and I eventually want to get into some deep, wreck, and cave diving.

Any help or advise would be much appreciated. Outside of my SPG and depth gauge/bottom timer what other gear is essential for starting out?

There's a GUE-Ontario Facebook group, if you are on Facebook. It seems pretty active.

As far as gear goes, there is a very good description on the GUE website, but you basically need a backplate with continuous harness, long hose regulator setup, and non-split fins to get going. A simple SPG and a bottom timer and compass are the necessary gauges (compass and bottom timer on wrists). You can add things like a canister light later, although having SOME kind of light is helpful from day one.

Hey Mofous,

There are a few people in and around your area, in St. Catherines, Guelph, and Toronto. There is a group called GUE Ontario, that you can also join in with, and we would be more than happy to meet you for a dive, and to go over any gear questions that you have.

The new site for GUE Ontario is gueontario.com (with a www in front). It is not fully up to date yet, as I am still piecing it together. :)

Steve Blanchard is our local GUE Instructor, along with Dan MacKay, and a few others that are interning!

You can contact us via PM, and we will happily help! :)
