This was a good read. I took over ten years from "zero to way less than hero". I put in a butt load of dives in between the classes and I am glad I did. It's good to perfect the new skills before adding others... as you said:

Mental note: don’t start a cave class with weak dive skills, things aren’t going to “just work out somehow”.

Take your time. The caves aren't going anywhere any time soon. They'll be there when you're good and ready.
