Thank you so much for all the help guys! I'll be contacting dive shops today and setting stuff up this week. This advice has been a HUGE help! I am going to try to go to the Gulf & get a dive in either this weekend or next weekend, just to have one more under my belt before I head there! I can't wait to go! I think based on the advice here i am going to try to do a mix of both boat and shore dives, all of which will be with a DM so that I don't miss anything. I'll wait and do my AOW classes when I get back with my LDS who I already have a good relationship with.

My wife and I will be staying near Kaanapali from July 2 to July 7, and 8th and 9th near Kehei - we'll be shore diving mostly, and one day (haven't figured out which one yet, we'll be renting a bare boat to sail out to Molokini to dive there in the morning as well. If you're interested in joining us and throwing a few bucks in for the bare boat rental, hit me off line....

+1 for Lahaina Divers. Great people plus they offer guided dives for all levels of experience. You can even do Molokini (the crater) if you want!

As for AOW...my recommendation is to get some dives under your belt before starting it. As many pointed it is better to do it where you dive more often than in the tropics. Plus you will not be enjoying your trip as much since you will be concerned about training dives.

Michael SeaWolf: I wish we were going to be there then. We don't arrive on the island until the 13th, or I would LOVE to do that. Thank you so much for the offer!

Mala pier with a guide or an experienced (there) dive buddy and Molokini as a boat dive would be great.

Skip the AOW and just do some dives with one of us local Maui guides. I guarantee if you pay attention on my briefings and dives you will come away a better diver. Guaranteed. Then you will be more than ready to tackle an AOW class at your leisure.
