My buddy and I were staring into a cove, realizing that no one would be diving here today. Too much wind and waves to have a relaxing dive. The boat dive we had planned for the day had already been canceled, and we were trying to salvage a Friday off with a shore dive.
We walked over to another pair of would-be divers to discuss this situation. In conversation we found out that this was supposed to be their first open water dives. About this time their instructor wanders over, and we reviewed the situation with him. He asks us if we ever dove this other wreck that's in the area that's at 200fsw. We tell him we're just recreational divers.
He proceeds to tell us this dive can be done on Nitrox. We question him to make sure we heard him correctly. He then tells us that although he's not certified to teach recreational Nitrox he was a Master Diver in the Navy, and he knows what he's talking about.
I made the comment that the Navy runs much higher PPO the recreational divers just to make sure we didn't undermine him in front his students. I was really glad this clown wasn't my instructor.
I know a lot of untrained divers don't fully understand Nitrox, but I expect a lot more from an instructor, even if they don't teach Nitrox.
