Closing this one, as it has now been working fine over the last days.
Problem: Search index suddenly gone.
Logfile showed:
Cause: scriptkiddie deleted the search index by connecting directly to the search service.
Solution: close the port that was used for this access (I forgot to do that after migrating to the new server).
