What would you do if you found yourself breathing really fast/hard underwater and the reg felt like it wasn't giving you enough gas?
This is an interesting question and one, which I have run into a few times. I am totally a novice diver and have logged less than 20 dives, however, under some interesting circumstances. I will man up and admit I have entered the pre-stages of full-blown panic a few times for a variety of reasons if not in full-blown panic. There was an awesome thread in the Advanced Discussion surrounding panic, are their people more prone to panic, and what causes seasoned divers to panic. I believe everyone has the potential to panic and it is just a matter of what ones own personal plate can handle at any given time.
The best I was given from this board, is to stop, breathe, think, breathe some more, and then act. Words of wisdom! However, in reviewing the few incidents where my breathing seemed to get away from me and I was struggling to regain it, it actually took an observant DM who grabbed my arm, looked me in the eyes, and through almost osmosis and will through physical contact reclaimed my breathing getting it back into a manageable cycle. Now, prior that incident I was struggling to catch my breathe and stuck in a wicked current. Now I would have stopped completely and focused all my energy on regulating my breathing. However, my question is, if said event happened again, and you are diving with an insta-buddy or foreign DM how and what signals can you use that would be recognized as “hey I’m having a hard time breathing?” After checking your equipment and one has deemed ok my equipment is fine and maybe the problem is I am over exerting myself and self-help seems to be failing.
Thoughts?
