They have obviously mapped a bit of it as the Search co-ordinator has often referred to the area as having undersea mountains and thick silt layers - https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/latest/a/22649924/mh370-ocean-depth-thwarts-first-sonar-probe/ but apparently in more recent articles there is nothing mapped there

So much conflicting information everywhere.

I think it comes down to the precision of the mapping. You can see radar maps that show all the canyons and mountains of the world's oceans. There are single beam bathymetry charts and multibeam surveys that provide much more detail of the topography than the radar images. The side scan mapping with he AUVs shows small details that wouldn't be visible to the charting instruments. Think basketball vs basketball stadium
