New to posting on the internet although have been browsing for some time. Although certified back in 1973 and periodically active, have recently resumed scuba diving after a six year layoff while pursuing other interests. My recent reading has left me quite impressed with the advances in technical diving and the acceptance of mixed gas diving by the major certifying agencies, although I have questions about the use of Nitrox for recreational diving here in New England. I have found that the internet provides much useful information, which must be filtered out of much more useless information. It also appears that too many people forego simple courtesy in their posts, their lack of civility perhaps encouraged by the lack of accountability afforded by the medium. Then again perhaps I'm just out of touch with what is considered acceptable behavior in today's e-culture.
Regardless, I appreciate the opportunity to exchange ideas and information with other divers around the world and expect that I will be able to continue to learn much more from their experiences and perspectives.

Oh yes, I selected the monicker of "xroirat" to reflect the time I spent on the island of Roi-Namur in the Kwajalein Atoll, where we were dubbed, "Roi Rats." The social conditions were less than ideal, but the diving was fantastic.
Cheers.

Heya, welcome to the board and back into diving. I think you'll find all different sort of people here but we all have a common interest.

Cheers,
Vickie

Hello there xroirat and welcome to Scubaboard! I think you've got a pretty good handle on things. Truly you must discern the good from the bad. I do know that this is the biggest and best internet community for divers so I'm sure there are plenty of knowledgeable people to help answer any questions you may have.

Howdy!

And welcome to SB - the biggest, the best, the fastest growing, and :D the friendliest!
If you'll click ScubaBoard.com above, you'll be taken to our long list of forums, a wealth of information and resources. At the bottom, be sure to notice the Local & Singles Dive Club forums.

It would help in future diving discussions if you'd complete your Profile with your Dive Info. You can use the Quick Links in the bar above for such changes. And sizing a photo for your profile or Avatar can be a challenge; I'm a fumbling amateur, but I get the job done, if you'd like any help?

PM me if I can help you learn your way around; that is - click my username to the upper left, then follow the prompts to send me a "Personal Message." :thumb:

Hey and welcome!

Yes, the net has a huge signal to noise ratio issue

And, yes, it's too easy to post something a lot more hostile than you would say to someone's face.

But, as a member of a lot of net communities over the years, I can honestly say that this is one of the most friendly and informative groups of folks you'll find in cyberspace. I hope you enjoy it! :D

Welcome to ScubaBoard! :happywave

Although it helps to approach communication in the e-culture with a thick skin, I think you'll find that this is one of the more polite places to gather information.

You may want to visit our New England Lobsta Divahs forum to see what ScubaBoard members are up to in your neck of the woods.

Also, since you've expressed an interest in some of the advancements made in the technical diving community, you may want to drop in on our Tek Talk forum as well as our DIR forum. Discussions in these two forums can be a bit more spirited at times than other parts of the board, but you'll find some great information there.

Dive safe!

Christian

P.S. Due to the high volume of new posts in the Introductions and Greets forum, it's not always possible to keep up with all the new posts here. So, please help me out and send me a PM if you post anything you want me to read or respond to in this forum.

WELCOME to ScubaBoard!!!
You outlined the situation pretty well, but as said we keep our discussion relatively civil; at least our huge phalanx of MODS do.
Join in the fun!

Hmm. Maybe.
This is a great place to meet people, talk about diving, and get information on just about any aspect of diving -or other subjects sometimes- that you can think of. Roaming through the forums is great help for me.
Now get wet with us and dive into the forums to ask questions, answer those that you can and even chat with folks about diving dreams and nightmares. ScubaBoard is a great place to spend your required Surface Intervals.
Again, Welcome to the greatest addiction!
It's so easy to forget the things that we love, but here at ScubaBoard, we're all doing our dead level best to maintain the highest level of SCUBA ADDICTION possible.
Please stay with us, interact, and keep your need to get wet alive!
When you post a question, be as sure as you can that it's in the right forum or you'll probably find it moved to where it can receive better attention.
The folks here are passionate about their diving, some about their specialty, so the reading can get very interesting, sometimes very hot.
Don't forget, if you haven't already done it, to fill out you profile as completely as reasonable, it'll save you being asked and having to repeat the information often.

"Roi Rats"...(King Rats translated!) I love it! Welcome to the Board and Community...we looking forward to having you!

Welcome there x-rio-rat.

You will find a lot of good information here. You may not always agree with everyone's opinion, but is what makes this board so great.

You can express your opinion and still have friends afterwards to talk to.
