I dont like checking my bags & always stuff everything I need in the carry on.

So storing a knife isnt an option.

What do you do in order to get the tools you need on-site?

Just send it in the mail via fed-ex to the hotel your staying a day a head of time or something?

If my cutting tool is attached to my regulator hose, I just take the knife out of the sheath & wrap it in a towel or such & pack it in the checked luggage. If this is not an option to you, then I would say that you will either have to ship it to your destination or buy another one to plan to leave. Not too many options really.

Take a mini maglite sheath with you. Go to dollar store when you get there. Buy cheap pack of steak knives. Break off tip. Voila- DIR style knife! Or try to find a cheap set of EMT shears there.

+ 1...

You can even try to carry on EMT shears, you may or may not get away with it. If that's not working try and buy them at your destination and gift to another diver or DM before you leave. Or yeah, the cheap steak knife thing.

Do you not like the fee, or waiting for the bag at the other end, or afraid they will lose it, or someone will steal stuff. If it's the last 2, maybe check a small bag with some extra clothes and whatever sorts of things may get stopped in security, but that you don't care about too much.

What do you do with your knife?

Why NOT check a bag? If you're fed-exing it, then you may as well just check a bag? Isn't that easier and maybe almost the same cost?

Don't want to wait around, don't want to pay extra, don't want to take the chance of losing my bags. I've never checked a bag on an airline, always only pack what can fit in overhead compartments. And with the new Dive Caddy bag, things seems very easy.

Sending a knife to a hotel via fedex before I leave is way easier than all of the stress that comes with checking bags. No thanks.

Just checking... so... you don't want to pay $25 to check a bag (or free depending on the airline you fly) and wait 10 minutes at the airport? Instead, you'd rather pay fed ex $35-40 to overnight your knife, and maybe pay the hotel an additional "receiving fee" to receive your package? Ok then. Fed Ex is the way to go then.
