FWIW I have heard of fundies and training and before this thread have not really considered it but with what the knowledgeable people have posted here I am more interested in a class now. Thanks to those that have put up with the bs and posted some good info.

Endurodog - It was the best money I spent for a class up until that point. It is not an expensive class when you consider how many days and hours each day you're with your instructor. Good luck!

Maybe they no longer wait for the comet, but there was a recent time when DIR was synonymous with the Halcyon brand and all DIR divers did indeed dress exactly alike.

As I understand it, at one time big H was the only manufacturer of philosophy (whether you agree with it or not) compliant gear. So it actually has nothing to do with a cult and everything to do with gear that was better/more appropriate. That isnt the case anymore.

And here I thought it was because the President of GUE is also the CEO of Halcyon. There was plenty of "compliant gear" manufactured at the time, yet only Halcyon gear was deemed worthy of true DIR/GUE divers.

"Never forget the importance of history. To know nothing of what happened before you took your place on earth, is to remain a child for ever and ever."

nvm, thanks much for the history lesson.

I took GUE Fundamentals last week. The course kicked my a$$. The classroom component was not overly difficult, but the skills required were very challenging for me - this was undoubtedly complicated by cold-to-exceedingly-cold water temperatures, having done only two cold water dives since last fall, and the need for matching drysuit undergarments. I should have done the course at Ginnie... OK, I will stop complaining... :)

I got a rec pass, but no "5s." In fact, I am not sure how many 4s I got... :) Lesson: I need more practice, and more frequent practice.

Good on you, GUE, for putting together a b@ll-busting course! It has been humbling...

Disclaimer: this course may, in fact, be easy for some. Do not allow my personal comments to deter you from taking Fundies - it is worthwhile.

Crush:

I would like to extend my sincere apologies, as I too have participated in this mess. I want to congratulate you on your pass and all the fun you had in class. I think among all the bickering, we have lost sight of why this thread was created.:yelclap::cheerleader::clapping:

I realize there is a bunch of chest thumping and boners being created here, but can't Crush has his one moment of happiness? If you want to keep bashing each other, you should think about creating another thread of why one should not train under GUE vs insert agency here. As my grandmother always told me, "whatever you learn, it can never be taken from you." So if what one learns from GUE or TDI or who have you and it makes you better in some way, what is the harm?

Congrats Crush....

The rest of this drivel is a fun read.
