I don't know what the deal is, but every dive I do with the D1 2nd stage I get really bad cotton mouth. I thought the first time it was due to being a bit dehydrated, but this past weekend I did a lot of dives, no health issues, well-hydrated, and still had this happen.

My A700, S600, R395, and none of my Dive Rite regs make me feel this sensation. I don't get it. Two people I spoke to this weekend (one has Hog D1 and the other Apeks) have the same feeling.

I really want to like this D1, and in fresh water it's easy to rinse my mouth out, but I'd be hesitant to do a 2hr dive in salt water with it unless I have a thigh pocket full of capri sun packs! Any thoughts?

I've never had the privilege of diving with a 'wet' regulator in salt water, but I'm quite certain I would not like the experience. . .

Any thoughts?
Check the mouth piece. I was breathing wet on one of my regs and found small holes on the mouthpiece. I'll be getting more Sea Cure mouthpieces at DEMA this year. :D

I though James was calling it too dry a reg.

yepper he is. Given that you should be breathing air with 0% water in it, the only reason I can think of for dry mouth with one reg vs. another is that it is leaking water. . . again not something I would wish to experience in salt water. . .

A dry 2nd stage is probably a combination of these factors:
Well sealed and fitting mouthpiece.
Properly sealing exhaust valve.
Powerful venturi.
Warm water...little condensation on the metal parts inside.

......my worst offender is a Kirby Morgan which I now only use when the water temp is below 78.

OK, I'll bite. . . where does the condensation come from ?

I must say that I find it interesting that most (if not all) of the "my reg is better" rant threads end up being HOG vs ScubaPro. There must be a reason, or reasons, for that.

I personally have not knocked any other regs in the past in terms of their performance (at least I dont recall doing so). I have an old Sherwood reg I picked up used that is like trying to suck mud up through a straw, even after being serviced. I have an Atomic reg set that is ok but just cant quite measure up to the regs I use all the time. The regs I use all the time are HOGS and I love them. I have not tried ScubaPro and so I have no idea how they breathe.

The only time I get truly upset with other posters is when they pull out the tired old refrain of "you get what you pay for" and in doing so imply that all HOG users are either too poor to buy anything else or cheapskates.
I find that extremely offensive. I am NOT too poor to buy something else and have two other reg sets as well as my two HOG reg sets to prove it. On the other hand, I guess you could call me a bit of a cheapskate if you consider one that avoids paying more than he has to as being a cheapskate. I do look for deals. I see nothing wrong with that at all. I feel that any money I can save, while still getting the product or service that I want, is money I can put towards other stuff for me of for my family. I see nothing wrong with that. However, if I thought for even a second that I was endangering my life by using HOG I wouldnt use them. If I thought for a second that using HOG would endanger someone else or that HOG was not a good reg choice I would never recommend them to anyone else.

In my opinion HOG regs are not "cheap" but, relatively speaking, they sure are inexpensive and what the heck is wrong with that?

wow the saga continues, chris send bd a reg and let him try one out, who knows....

It wouldn't do any good....
