Diving myths taught for safety?

Has anyone mentioned turning the SPG away from your face when you turn the tank on? I do it out of habit but in 43 years I've never seen one explode.

I was told to also put it glass down on the ground and gently put your foot on it. You also probably need an old analog SPG/console that has a long enough hose to reach the ground. I suppose you could get a crack in the SPG glass before assembling the unit, so it may explode when air is turned on.

Unless I'm mistaken, modern SPGs have blow-out plugs built in, making this scenario now a true diving myth. If there is a failure from the hose block to the Bourdon tube, the pressure will vent less dramatically and the face will not blow out.

I don't need an old analog SPG I have 2 that I dive with. I guess I'll keep turning the face away.

Why are caves and wreck penetrations bad? Uneducated people die in there a lot
Why should I not dive solo? You can if you are self reliant

ironically, it is more likely to crack from putting it glass down with your foot on it

And you might be wrong. Althought not your usual SPG but a button SPG... "Pop"

Happened to me a few years back. I heard a huge bang and the thing was in pieces. It didn't shatter though.

If your instructor has not told you the "why", he has not done his job.
