Personally, I'd rather feed relief/funds via direct volunteers that I know and trust on a local basis. Some of the larger relief organizations, especially in a 'financially opaque' country like the Philippines may not achieve an efficient transfer of funds to where they are needed...[cynic mode disengaged]

The UN is now getting involved in what is a very large relief/emergency operation..

8 November 2013 – The United Nations and its partners are supporting the Government of the Philippines in assessing the damage caused by super typhoon Haiyan, which made landfall this morning in Guiuan on Samar Island and is currently making its way across the country.

“We are working closely in support of Government and local authorities to assess the life-saving needs of the people affected by this typhoon,” said Julie Hall, acting Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the Philippines.

The super typhoon, known locally as Yolanda, has ripped roofs off housing, uprooted trees and affected businesses, but the full extent of the damage will not be known until the storm has passed.

According to media reports, it is one of the strongest storms ever recorded, with sustained winds of 295 kilometres per hour (kph), placing it above the 252 kph threshold for a Category 5 hurricane, the highest category on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. Three people have reportedly died, and seven others have been injured.

Haiyan is expected to travel over eastern, central and western Visayas, Bicol and Southern Tagalog, which have a combined population of 29.4 million people. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) described the typhoon as “violent” but said it is expected to weaken slightly on a trajectory towards Viet Nam.

The Government has taken preventative steps to save lives by moving people from coastal and low-lying areas known to be prone to flash flooding and landslides. The UN Humanitarian Country Team and partners have complemented these efforts by pre-positioning stocks to respond to life-saving needs of affected people.
“The Humanitarian Country Team and partners are fully prepared to support and assist the Government in response to this latest typhoon,” said Ms. Hall. “We will continue to support their efforts as we wait to see exactly the extent of the damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan.”
The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that 2.5 million people will require immediate assistance in the aftermath of the typhoon, and said it would participate in the Government-led assessment.
Haiyan is the third major crisis to hit the Philippines in just two months. In October, the Bohol earthquake affected more than 3 million people, triggering landslides engulfing entire homes, ripping apart bridges and tearing down centuries-old churches. Seven cities in three different provinces were initially affected. In September, tens of thousands were forcibly displaced by armed clashes in Zamboanga City in the southern part of the country.

Super Typhoon Haiyan: 'It is like a tsunami has hit' - CNN.com

"The sheer devastation and debris is something I have seen from tsunamis -- I haven't seen damage of this magnitude from a typhoon before. Every single tree is either flattened or broken off and stripped bare. This damage to the trees alone shows the strength of the winds.Officials tell me the storm surge came as high as the second story of the terminal building here and it clearly has devastated the structure. What was once inside the building is now strewn outside."

Donating to some of the funds. It looks terrible but I know the country is resilient and will bounce back.

Boracay really did have very little impact. The top of the eye did pass over the island but it was so weak by then nothing happened.
The east side got hit by maybe 60kt gusts whereas the west side only 400m away had little more than a breeze at ground level. At the peak of the storm on the west people were still paddling in the flat calm sea.
I walked over to the east to watch it arrive and it was far rougher there.
There is still a region wide power cut and given the damage to poles and lines I can see it taking a long time to fix. Ultimately though other than some trees down and damaged roofs, Boracay escaped this thing completely.
The eastern Philippines got hammered far far worse.

I'm hearing quite a different story regarding Boracay from my buddy who owns Fisheye Divers.

He said, "Hank there us damage, many many trees crashed . Roofs gone, some houses totaled. Power lines down. But really, we have been super lucky. Ada far as I know no casualties. We expect no power for about a week. Diesel is out is stock as well as SMB"

The death toll is now over 1200 and rising rapidly. The rise is only limited by the lack of communication to the hardest hit areas. There are 000,000's displaced and homeless. This is a human disaster on an immense scale of magnitude.

Please show some empathy, it is hardly appropriate to discuss "marine animals returning to reefs" or whether X, Y or Z resort will be open for your feather-lined holiday in whatsoever many weeks.

Please find an active charity that you trust and do donate. These wonderful, welcoming and resilient people need your help...

Some of the dive ops in Cebu are planning to send a relief boat over to Malapascua. A friend in Cebu spoke with Andrea from Thresher Shark Divers and apparently the island has been utterly devastated, but zero known deaths.

Thanks for the news. Andrea has been able to post to Facebook. As she states Malapascua is unfortunately devastated. Someone has managed to post some aerial photos of the island i don't know how. I think a photo album can be accessed below.

Hi guys
Need some info! Looking for my sister Briony Eales and Gio Bacareza. They were on Malapascua diving when the typhoon hit. Haven't heard anything since Thursday night, so anyone with any info would be great. Please help!
