Check for used computers. You can find really great deals on eBay, SB, CL, etc - a few months ago I got an Uwatec Tec2G with a DSS bungee mount, new face protector and new battery for $100 shipped. The reason I mention the Tec2G is that it's very similar to the XP10 and in addition has gauge mode and 2 gas support (if you ever end up using those)

My 2PSI.....
First, avoid using two computers that use different algorithms.
Second, decide if you want a watch style or not.
Thirdly, most computers will do just about everything you need at your level, simply pick a colour you like.
[emoji1] The Hollis DG3 is a great one for $250, there are many others around that price point.
If you want to just buy one computer for the rest of your diving career and any remote chance of diving wrecks, low vis or technical, buy a Petrel 2.

Stuartv. Have you dove the computers you are critiquing?

Nope.

Do you think the data that came from the hyperbaric chamber dive simulations is not valid in some way?

Do you think I should buy a bunch of different computers and try them? Or is it valid to research them, read actual published data, and make a purchasing decision based on that?

Is there other published data that conflicts with the data that I have drawn my own conclusions on?

Nope. Just helping the OP make an informed decision. :kiss2:

I have been looking at the Leaonardo as my first doc because it has received good reviews and is not overly priced. Once I've been diving for a bit and get more experiments, I was thinking of getting the Shearwater Petrel 2 as my primary and use the Leonardo as my backup. I have yet to read anything negative about Shearwater, expect people wishing there was AI.
I've no complaints about my Leonardo but if I were buying a starter DC today I'd get one of these while they last: Amazon.com: Aeris A300 Wrist Computer ~Includes now FREE the Digital online class to get the most out of your dive computer.: Sports & Outdoors -- it's basically feature set of the giotto (suggested by another poster) for less than leonardo's going price, and with a choice of algorithms. Plus it has the "no alarms but keep tracking" mode of a backup computer: with leonardo as a backup your choices are "gauge" but no diving for 24 hours if you have to switch, or "dive" and ignore the beeping etc.

I agree. I think that's a good computer. Thus why I had bought the console version of it (the A300 XT) which is now for sale in the Classifieds here. It was my backup computer/backup SPG/compass. It was really nice that the algorithm matches the algorithm in my main computer (an Atom 3.0). But, now I need to buy a Tech computer, so the A300 needs to go. Getting the console version saved me paying even more to buy an SPG and a compass.

Did I say something before that you disagree with?

Was my statement that I've been diving less than a year and that I did not buy one of the Cressis not clear enough?

I'd suggest to at least read pages 1 and 4 (at least) of this thread:

http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/co...zers/305374-so-you-want-buy-new-computer.html

I've been diving less than a year. I'm glad I did not buy one of the Cressi computers. Why? Because, even though I've been diving less than a year, I bought a much more liberal dive computer and I am having no trouble staying down long enough to reach my NDL time. If I had bought a more conservative computer, I would be being forced* to get out a lot sooner than I have been.

*forced meaning that I choose not to stay down longer than my computers says my NDL is.

Dive Gear Express has the Petrel and the H3 with the same or better prices.

CA price for Petrel 2: $749 Cave Adventurers - Computers - Marianna, Florida USA - Never Undersold!
DGX price: $749 https://www.divegearexpress.com/shearwater-petrel

Air Hogs price for H3: $975 Sub Gravity H3 Wrist Computer | Air Hogs SCUBA NJP Store, SCUBA Sales
DGX price: $775 https://www.divegearexpress.com/subgravity-seabear

I don't even see the H3 on DRiS' website.

I have not bought anything from CA, Air Hogs, or DRiS, so I cannot comment on them. But, I have bought a lot of stuff from DGX and their customer service and return policy are both awesome.

I have, you will not go wrong with CA, DRIS or DGX, great people, great service.

Often it's not what we say but the way we say it.

the difference with Cave Adventurers, Dive Right in Scuba, and Air Hogs is that they are actually Local Dive Shops, and they will often negotiate prices. DGX has fixed prices and there is no room for "package deals" or anything with them. If it isn't on their website, it doesn't exist to them. While their return policy is nice, and some gear they have is nice because it is so cheap, I do try to give actual dive shops a chance to match their price....

I also got a nice offer on a new Sub Gear XP10 2 Gauge Console Dive Computer (comp and SPG) Retails for $379 and I can get it for considerably less.
The XP-10 is an excellent dive computer. I have been diving it for years. It was the Scubapro Prime by Uwatec before they marketed it under the Subgear line. The XP-10 has a very good record. It is a proven piece of gear.

Ok, here us another can if worms: wrist or console and why? If console, what gauges and why or why not? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new, I've searched and never got a clear answer.
