I suppose tipping is a personal decision and always will be, BUT.

After I have decided to take a week off rather than stay and earn money
Book a flight out of the country
Stay at a very nice resort
Eat at all of the best restaraunts
Indulge in umbrella drinks
Book multi day multi tank dives
Use my personal gear that I paid top dollar for because you can't trust that third world crap
Etc.

If I can't afford another $10 for a guy that makes $100/week maybe I should have stayed home.

I give the tip to the guy working the hardest and he can split it however he likes. The DM may not have to actually do anything for me, but if I know he's watching me and will help out if I need it, it's all the same. If the DM / mate / crew keeps other divers out of trouble when they are having or going to have issues, that is making my dive go well even though I'm not being helped directly.

Lets hope this takes off in all industries!!!!

This tipping thing in the dive industry is making me nuts anyway. Don't put it on your CC because to dive op will just keep it. (not my problem) Divemasters work for free. (not my problem) Don't give it to the captain because he/she will take a cut. (not my problem) If you are not with the same crew all week then you have no way to know who gets the money. (not my problem) Europeans get the same service I do (sometimes better because I am the "Ugly American and thus by default rich, arrogant, and narcissistic) yet I am expected to get it right every time. Just stop this tipping thing all together.

Yes. And up the pay to include what would/should have come from tips. Of course that will up what you pay up front. Fine with me. Makes my decision of where to go/stay much easier. No hidden costs. I'm all for it - but the employer would have to pay the employees fairly. I'm somewhat offended that employers expect me to pick up part of the salary for their employees. Do away with tips and pay fairly, then charge me what you need to. Much more straightforward with no suprises.

Of course this hidden crap is embedded everywhere - handling charges, dealer prep., sales tax (it's bundled in gas price - why not everywhere?), airline charges for getting your boarding pass at the desk, and on and on and on. It's simply a way to trick you into thinking you are paying less than what you are going to be charged.

5 bucks(USD) a tank-----that's it for me..........

I guess you are not talking about me.

- I am required to take vacation whether I want to or not. I don't have the choice of staying at work and making more money.
- I look very hard to find the lowest price I can find because I cannot afford to spend a lot.
- I eat in cheap locations to save money for diving.
- I drink very little. I don't believe (for me) that drinking and diving go together.
- I book multi-day, multi-dive trips with the dive shop in advance because I get a discount that way.
- I take my own gear. I don't have top of the line gear but I have the best gear that I can afford. Some new, some used.
- Most of the DMs and Instructors I meet are young people using diving as a way to fund their traveling around the world. If I was young again I would do the same thing.

I tip what I can afford.

Where i come from tipping in restaurants has only now become a thing and tipping the crew is unheard of. However, when I went to Cayman for vacation i followed the tipping policy there.

On one side of the island i was split up between two different crews... i tipped the crew that was more friendly/helpful more.

At ocean frontiers there are tip boxes in the shop for each crew and a central tip box for all crew... I put it in the central tip box but there was one DM that was extra helpful, showing me tips for stowing my spool etc... he got an additional tip.

I tip what i can afford though, but i think it ended up working out to about 10% of the trip at each resort... i was satisfied with that

My boat diving is always one day two dives. I always tip the DM $10/tank as it seems to be today's going rate and I know most DMs only make tips on boats. As mentioned, Captains are of course paid, and I would assume any other crew as well (otherwise why would they do it?--at least the DM usually gets to dive).
