Those are some crazy rumors. The answer is discussing and introducing a different perspective, you'd be surprised at the rumors that are only the tip of the iceberg around here...or just a variation of an actual event.

Rumors and gossip propagate easier in a vacuum. This forum is so highly moderated there is no chance for sides to speak their mind about edgy issues, especially if it is offensive to your pals.
GI3 had some good points in his rants, his contributions would be so highly moderated here the humor and entertainment would be gone.

There are instructors who have committed stupid crimes, stolen from friends, violated standards, abandoned students, wars between instructors and shops that when known make their biased output clearly understood.

Those aren't rumors, those are incidents that actually happen that you and instructors take great pains to hide. imo it's sometimes about libel and slander vulnerabilities, sometimes to protect your friends or advertisers, agency agreements...in the end it's filtering truth.

There is nothing wrong with talking about things that happen or people who act the fool. Sometimes correlating information is the best way to know the truth.
The best way is to ask the person directly, face to face. I've made it a point to seek people out and ask directly what happened. You'd be surprised how it clears things up, some were not so comfortable conversations, it is what it is.
I can't wait to ask a certain someone about their definition of theft, it's going to be grand.

Sigh. You all think it is about ripping. I say, it is about the reaction to a newbie's bona fide question on the content of the program. It isn't *my* chain they were yanking - I couldn't care less about them. It is the vision imparted to anyone else reading the response. Sad. Just sad.

We probably censor less here than anywhere else. We allow facts and alleged facts but not personal attacks. Do you think X was arrested for cocaine? Post it. Better yet, post the police report. Do you want to claim that X is a coke snorting a-hole stroke? Then keep it to yourself. Report the facts as you see them without the emotional editorials and you're fine. Y'know, ScubaBoard put together a wonderful trip on the Spree, a wreck-trek. It was spectacularly awesome! It was, however, not as well attended as it could have been because the discussion made it seem as if the trip was targeted to tec diving only.

I asked a bona fide question on the content of the Workshop. What I got back was "we don't care if you and your ilk attend, you money is no good to us, and we won't miss you." And you think *I* was rude to the people that put together this workshop? And this was "joking around"?

So, Bennno . . . Why would a baby cave diver want to be there? So sorry, free beer doesn't have that appeal.

Pete is wholly on the money with this thread. Too many people do not care one whit how they portray the sport. The outliers watch this interaction and wonder ...

Yeah, right. You leave in the personal attacks and lies about me (and they are still on here), yet you censor my response to personal attacks. You guys just censor stuff you don't like, on the other hand you have no problem with leaving in damaging hearsay about instructors or about manufacturers.
I wonder why I never got banned on cdf or German forums...
I was banned both times for posting FACTS. The Mods just don't care about what's actually true since they could have just looked it up, but they don't care to. You also don't care to remove the personel attacks against me.

You wanna stop rumors, yet you think it's Ok to post a story about someone supposedly doing cocain? How is this not a contradiction?

Jax may I ask why you feel, as a 'baby' cave diver (as you put it) you have nothing of value to gain from listening to explorers and pioneers in this field? I personally believe newer cave divers have the MOST to gain from these talks. Honestly, even at higher levels, there are still gems to be gleaned from these sort of conversations. Not trying to poke fun at all, just genuinely curious.
