Hi All,

What's the deal with the Cobalt 2s now? I know there were a lot of problems with the Cobalt when it was first released. Have these been mostly resolved? The reviews online still seem poor, but it is hard to tell whether these are the result of the earlier issues, or an ongoing issue with quality, reliability, etc.

I know a couple of people who own the Cobalt, but I'd love to hear the opinions of others, especially if you have a lot of RECENT experience with them (e.g., if you sell them at your shop).

P.S., The Oceanic Proplus X seems like a possible alternative, but who knows what's going on there?! Are they ever going to be available?

Thanks!

Funny you asked. Atomic had my wife's computer for 2 plus months Cobalt 2. 3rd time it has been repaired.
We have had the buttons replaced, now they changed the battery because it was going from 100 to 60 pct in one evening.
They also changed the sensor.
My cobalt 2 seems to be "ok" but that being said I had to have the buttons replaced and had battery issues until I updated the firmware and shut it off by putting it in sleep mode
Great computers when they work but for the 2500 dollars we spent for both I would be hard pressed to recommend them.

@thumbsplitter where are we? It's a complete waste of money and always will be. It's a huge computer, isn't very good at what it does, and there are cheaper/better alternatives now that Shearwater has released the Perdix AI. Save yourself a couple hundred bucks and get a fully functional computer.

Save $200, sync to your phone/tablet, get control of your decompression algorithm, ability to use multiple transmitters, computer from a company known for their quality and service, standard batteries, reasonable size. There is literally 1 reason I can think of to ever look at that computer and that is if you work for a LDS that requires you to dive Atomic gear.

I would buy a Perdix AI today, but I really don't like the idea of wearing a computer on my arm. It doesn't look like there is any way to configure the perdix so that it attaches to a console or hose, correct?

not to my knowledge, but why don't you want the computer on your arm?

I've been using a console computer since 2004, so part of it is just "what I'm used to." The thing that I really like about having my computer on my regs, however, is that I don't have to put it on and take it off; it is always just attached to my gear.

they are certainly convenient for that, however the inconvenience comes when you need to look at them as well as the bit of extra clutter since they require longer hoses to look at. If I were you, I would give Northeast Scuba Supply a ring and see if they have a Perdix in stock. John is really cool and local to you. It's definitely worth at least checking out in person. He's up in Allentown, so may be a bit of a drive, but definitely worth it

Clip it off to a D ring?

That is where my time bottom timer lives...

mine usually gets put in a fin pocket before it gets put on, but I will also clip through the strap when I clip my primary off to my right shoulder d-ring if I need to take it off, or wait to put it on. It's obviously not as convenient as just being attached to the regulator, but it also means it's not bound to that regulator if something happens. With a Perdix AI you'd lose the AI function if you swapped regs to a rental or borrowed one, but you would still have your computer
