When you see movies like Catch Me If You Can you realize that flying was once a major event. People dressed up to go to the airport and were treated like VIPs - but it's not like that anymore!

If you've never read the book, you should.

Either that, or he never flew on LIAT.

Bringing this thread back up... Grocery stores on Brac... Which one is the best store? I am staying close to Carib Sands in a private home and I like to cook. I'd like to be able to cook steaks, burgers, breakfasts, etc. Am I going to find that I can eat at a restaurant for comparable to cooking for myself?

Also, anyone have any feedback on Captains Table?

You like to took, toke, cook? Ha, Ha. I hate autocorrect.

I believe that there are three grocery stores on CB. We think the best one is the one half way down the island on the left side. The one at Tibbets square is more convenient but is much smaller. Either way, you will need to have a car which is good anyway because you can participate in the great shore diving.

A lot of people bring food with them because the non-local price at the grocery can be expensive. We pack a cooler of frozen food. If you bring beef in it may be taxed. There is no tax on chicken.

There may be other customs issues when bringing in food?

I think Kirkconnell's is the largest market on Brac but keep in mind that most stores are closed on Sunday, so if you arrive on Saturday plan to do some shopping before the stores close.

Eating out is expensive in Cayman and you are wise to plan on preparing some of your meals. There's not a lot of restaurants on Brac but we have been to the Captain's Table and it is a nice, friendly, informal place to meet people and get a decent meal.

You certainly won't starve on Brac but the availability of fresh meat, produce, and dairy often varies with the arrival of the weekly barge. You might find that the grocery stores mostly have frozen meat, canned foods, and dry goods.

We usually stay at the Cayman Brac Beach Resort which is all-inclusive and you could try having a meal there, too. A lot of local have lunch there after church on Sunday morning.

You can also order from the CBBR bar menu and the hotel kitchen will cook it fresh. Try and make it to the Bingo game on Tues or Weds nights - it's a blast. They also have a poolside barbecue on Friday night, usually with live music, it is delicious but I don't know the price if you are not staying at the hotel.

Alcoholic drinks are also expensive in Cayman, you might want to pick up a bottle of duty-free liquor at the airport before you leave the US and mix some of your own drinks. The liquor stores are also closed on Sunday.

We love Brac and hope that you have a great trip. Below are a few links that you might enjoy, have fun!
