The one thing that I did see that I really liked was that when the one diver was assembling Mr Potato Head, the camera caught a few really good shots of his dive computer. Based on its configuration, I am guessing it is a Shearwater. I have heard how easy that they are to see/read. This video shows just how easy it is to read them at depth. I don't dive with one, and I had never seen one at depth before. This showed it very well.

Other than that, I saw a lot that even as a "vacation destination diver" looked wrong. I have been taught to not leave my octo, or my computer (or SPG) or any other gear dangling. These guys were bouncing their tanks off of the wreck repeatedly. I was also taught keep your hands off the dive site. Seems that these guys weren't taught the same philosophy.

Seriously, buy a Perdix. Shearwater has been killing it for quite a long time and the Perdix is amazing. Nothing bad to say about it at all.

The choice was clear for me.. From Zoop, to Petrel and then Perdix AI..

I would love a Perdix AI. Right now though I have an Oceanic Pro Plus 3 that is working just fine and I would need a very good reason to replace it. (Especially at $1500 Can for the Perdix AI.) When the day comes, and it will, that I need to replace my PP3, I think Shearwater will rise to the top of the list especially considering that my LDS carries them.)

Just as an FYI - that looks to be the older, larger Shearwater Predator with an OLED screen - not a newer, smaller Petral/Perdix with the LCD screen (which have great visibility as well).

How's the AI been? Sidemount features good?

I can not even begin to describe how well it has done, especially in sidemount. I have had zero issues with transmitters syncing up or cutting out or simply not working. I took my tanks off while we were at the "dock" in about 4' of water and set them on the dock. I then walked about 10' away to talk to someone and they noticed my pressures and I was discussing it with them and never once did the transmitters drop. Can not say enough good about the Perdix AI.

Nice! Can't wait to get the AI version to play with. Still love my non AI Perdix.

I sincerely want to know, is the stuff in this video considered the norm in many places?
Are you suggesting I said that?

There's nothing constructive in your first post. Did you go and talk to those guys to help them become better divers? Did your post point out the mistakes and how to solve them? Did you even ask what you "sincerely want to know"?

Here's some of the more mature reactions I've seen to some posts like yours in another place... They sum up my opinion pretty well.

some guy:
Again? I thought this was a forum for sidemount divers to discuss and help one another. Yet we have another post where someone post a picture of people with tanks out of trim so everyone can have a go at them. Sorry, but by having a go at people who probably can't even defend themselves because of a single picture, you're nothing but an online bully. Maybe offer advise to people how to avoid that issue? Publish/link an article how to keep cylinders in trim? Also ever considered that they might be used to steel tanks and just forgot to move them forward?

another guy:
I too am tired of the trend to post other's photos to offer unasked for critique, public derision and bash nuances of other diver's configurations without their knowledge. Try it face to face on a dock and see how welcome or beneficial such behaviour is.

In a hiking forum you don't see people incessantly posting pictures of people they think haven't tightened their boot laces correctly and suggestion they need an expert.

I'd love to get some dives in with an experienced SM diver so I consistently don't look like an underwater trainwreck. In the mean time. Here's my situation. What's up with these cylinders?

And finally, a thread from a while ago in which I believe this had been discussed as well... Is Side Mount the new DIR??? Building resentment towards us as a group...

I get what you're saying.. and I agree.

Criticism alone isn't beneficial to anyone. It's an ego-salve. However, there is a learning benefit to constructive criticism...a case study that engages debate and provides solutions and improvements.

Another factor to bear in mind is that this video features a class. I believe that instructors do warrant some criticism when there might be doubts that they're teaching to an acceptable standard.

The students are there to learn.. and can't be blamed if their instructor isn't setting them a high standard or teaching to a commonly acceptable level.

But an instructor who's decided to scribble their credit card details on an agency application form and take people's hard-earned money for tuition... in full knowledge that they haven't attained any semblance of expertise in the subject area... is very irresponsible. It demands commentary.
