What this guy said.

I have and use a Puck Pro for rec diving, and love it. I have no issues with it, and it does everything you will need.

I will buy a different computer at some point when I buy my own octo setup, and at that time I will want one with an integrated air system. But until that time I will dive my puck pro and be more than happy with it. Its a fantastic cheap first dive computer.

My takeaway on this? A diver whose profile says he has <25 dives bought a Puck Pro and already wants something different.

At the risk of going slightly off topic, I have some questions regarding a specific computer. Just didn't want to start a new thread.

I may have the opportunity to pick up an Oceanic Data Plus 2 computer. Just don't know much about them, and it didn't seem like there was much I could find on here. I'm concerned about support, and being able to find the data cable, etc.

My takeaway on this.

I have own and love my puck pro. I DONT have a bcd / octo setup at present. When I DO buy one eventually, Yes, I will upgrade my computer. But at the present, its a perfect computer for me.

I will continue to keep my pro as a back up computer. Why you might ask? Because I have made about 20 dives on it and love it. I have no issues with it. I have seen much more experience divers with them as a back up as well.

My takeaway on this.

You seem to want to embellish only one small point of my post. And you seem to want to forget the rest of it where I mention that I love and have no issues with this DC. It seems to me that you may have some biased opinion on this computer that you havent shared? Your posting style has been pretty passive aggressive about it through out the whole thread, and quite frankly I find it boring. And dont bother to reply to me. This will be my one and only reply to you on this. I have no desire to get into the back and forth banter you seem to want to foster.

You're responsible for yourself, this is idiotic. You want a SPG reminder for your gas pressure, come now.

:rofl3::rofl3::rofl3: fixed it for ya

Just a basic "puck" style dive computer. If you are getting it for next to nothing go ahead and use the hell out of it. While it is an older Nitrox computer it should be serviceable for rec diving.

You do realize that you could have bought an AI computer in the first place, even though you don't own your own BCD and regs? You CAN use an AI computer without actually having the transmitter for it. You just have to rely on an SPG for your tank pressure. So, you could have put the money you spent on a Puck towards the computer you really want.

Notice, I have never said there is anything wrong with your Puck. I have simply said that rather than push your personal choice on the OP, I think it's better to give the OP the actual facts about the options and let the OP decide for themselves, based on the actual pros and cons, rather than just "well, if it's good enough for Clayton's first 20 dives, then it must be okay for me."

I have and use a Puck Pro for rec diving, and love it. I have no issues with it, and it does everything you will need.

Do you know the OP outside of SB? Do you have other info about the OP other than what he/she posted in this thread? If not, how do you know that a Puck Pro will do everything he or she will need in the future? He or she already has more than twice as many dives as you do (apparently). What is your basis for stating that a Puck Pro will do everything the OP needs in the future? If you had said that to me when I had 50 dives (like the OP does), it would have been 100% wrong.

When a poster asks for a recommendation, why does it seem impossible for some to just leave their recommendation and not end up in with these endless back and forth arguments over whose recommendation is more correct?

Obviously I only speak for myself when I say that I seem to have some OCD compulsion to call out information that is posted that I believe to be completely wrong or has no basis to support it. E.g. "Buy a Puck Pro and save yourself several hundred dollars." Or, "a Puck Pro will do everything you will need." I don't care what the OP buys. I just want the OP to base their purchase decision on correct information.

I started out with the Mares Puck. I think I got it for less than $200 off Amazon. Granted it's not the Puck Pro, but I think I can give you what I did and what I didn't like about the Puck which probably translate to the Puck Pro.

Likes
1) Easy to set up
2) User replaceable battery
3) Display was easy to follow, everything you needed on one screen
4) Though I ended up turning off the alarms, plenty of alarms if you need them
5) Nitrox compatible
6) If sitting idle, never did go back to default settings (some do and I've seen people have some short dives because of it)

Dislikes
1) I couldn't find a bungee mount adapter for the computer
2) I like my computer more on the forearm, couldn't really do this with the "watch-style" band
3) The one-button became a total pain in the butt, especially when working in the dive log section (this really annoyed the crap out of me)
4) I had to replace the battery one time, and the plastic cover was too soft and it got messed up trying to get the cover off. Had to buy a new cover too.
5) In low viz you have to hit the button to get the backlight on (not a huge deal, but an annoyance)
6) Requires a Mares cable to get data, they are expensive, although there are threads on how to make your own

Do I regret buying the Puck? No , it's become a backup computer/loaner to friends for me now. However, I think (no evidence) there are probably better computers around the same price range.

Good luck, hope this helps.

I think a hosed AI computer is a good choice for newer divers.

Hosed so you don't have to worry about wireless syncing.

Hosed so you don't have to worry about forgetting to bring or put on your dive computer. It's permanently connected to your regulator.

AI because it puts newer divers at ease to see all relevant data at a single glance. More experienced divers don't worry so much about tank pressure because through their experience they already know how much air they are using.
