We are discussing the need for a PLB or something similar. We also ski, though, so it’d be amazing to find something with multiple uses. We are primarily concerned with an “open water” scenario and being lost at sea. Underwater isn’t too big of a deal. Are there any suggestions?

What is your thought for skiing? In case of an avalanche?

For diving, I use Nautilus Lifeline, which is essentially a waterproof, hand held, marine band radio.

It sounds like you are talking about an EPIRB, uses the SARSat network to inform the local MRCC about your location. I’ve got one I use for sailing. About the size of a small VHF.

I put this little guy in my pants pocket when I go skiing, or hiking and put it in a waterproof case in my BCD pocket when I go diving in the last 2+ years. Haven’t need to use it, yet, knock on wood.

I carry that too and plan to use it first before the PLB when boats are still visible in the horizon. Once no boat is seen, then it’s time to launch the big gun (PLB1)

Here are what I carry in my BCD pockets. Except for the Dive Alert, which is on the power inflator.
