I hated wearing a snorkel. Pulled at my mask and was just flopping all over. I think I only wore it once or twice after OW. My diving doesn’t really require it.

I can't saying anything about you and what you can or can't do
That was not my question.

Are my issues with deploying a long hose safely with a snorkel tube sticking up over my head a problem caused by my lack of skills? Because that's what I read from your recent posts, but you seem to refuse to answer clearly when I try to clarify your position.

I thought that it was standard to have the snorkel on the left side and the regulator and octo on the right side. I am a newbie. I might be wrong.

Quick aside to answer your question: I currently have my recreational single reg set configured for left side octo and is recommended that way by some shops. It's more common to have both regs off the same (right) side.

If you think about where the hoses would go during an actual donation situation, the left side routing is better for donating because it:
- encourages right-side-up position of the regulator, so could be helpful if panicked diver grabs the octo and puts it in their mouth without thinking and gets a bunch of water
- allows a direct path to the octo when facing the OOG diver compared to the right side where the hose comes in between the two divers and turns 180 degrees into the octo, and can put sideways pressure on it
- allows the maximum length of the hose to be used if the OOG diver is swimming on the left

Now the downside - if the left side octo is good for donating it's not as nice if you're the one having to use it. If the OOG diver grabs your primary or you choose to donate it, then you have to use the octo and the hose routing won't be as comfortable as the right side octo.

But if you're a primary donate sort of person, maybe you should really be thinking long hose anyway for the additional benefits and you can participate in a different debate.

Did you try it and practice it to get over your problems with it? Learning and being able to do it without issues is a matter of practice and improving your skill doing it. It wasn't/isn't a big deal for me to be able to do it without issues. Complaining about not being able to do it without putting the time to do it properly and perfecting your technique is just like people who complain about it with regular hose who confuse the snorkel with their BC inflator hose. Perhaps have somebody make a video of you doing it for you to find out where you are doing wrong to correct your posture and technique.

Why are you so insistent that everyone has a snorkel attached. Yes I ware one all the time, but I don’t tell others how to configure kit - long hose or not. The exception is when training as, in BSAC’s core syllabus, secondary take or donate is taught.

Same here and for the same reasons - I stopped wearing it after my 1st year of diving and have not worn one since - nor have I seen the need for one in my diving. If I do find a situation where it would be handy, I'll just carry the foldable I bought.

I have never insisted that everyone should have a snorkel attached at all. I am rejecting some of the very false excuses that some people put out for justifying not wearing snorkel that are misleading and convey the wrong reason for not wearing one. One can simply say that they hate it or don't like it and it will be more acceptable than to come up with false and misleading excuses for not having one on while diving. We are in the "New Divers and Those Considering Diving" forum that is directed towards the very new divers and those that are contemplating taking up diving and who lack solid knowledge and understanding of diving and will make the wrong decisions based on false and wrong information. We have to be careful withe these impressionable divers and how the information is formulated as not to spread false information.

I can't breathe without my snorkel but those that lost and tossed these over the years obviously could

Ouch! That's gonna hurt losing the Atomics SV2 snorkel in your photo (front left bonnet with blue flashes). That bad boy will set you back over $70, I kid you not!

I just checked, they're $100 here, I've left more snorkels than I've collected, how do you like Shaun the Sheep
