I'd strongly recommend Mansfield dam in Austin for a first deep dive, you can swim up to the dam wall and drop with a nice visual reference

Trip report from last weekends trip: Decent sized swells, 64F water, no oil anywhere, Hammerheads, Tigers and mantas a plenty. Amazing trip. Overheard multiple times on the rough seas: "I didn't know if I would be sea sick so I didn't take my dramamine and now I can't keep it down HURRRAGHH".

I'll be there this weekend - I came for the hammerheads, but am really excited for the tiger sharks.
