What skills did your instructor model?

I think what I am trying to point out is that there is no one right way of teaching. The instructor makes the difference, not necessarily the technique.

What skills did your instructor model?

As I watched the video I was wondering why the instructor was not in a better position to instantly assist the student if there was a problem. I have taught hundreds of students in shallow ocean water right off the beach in "pool-like conditions". If I was not on my knees I would have been...

Buddy team separated from a guided group

In most of the areas I have dove, the group is expected to stay together. However, I have found that after diving with the guides for several dives, they realize that I am a rational human being, dive safe, and appear to know what I am doing. At this point I am usually allowed to lead my own...

    Good Dive Operations in Maui???

The backwall of Molokini reminds me of diving along a wall of the Grand Canyon underwater:)

Looking for best dive operator in Kona

Regardless of who you go with, you are going to love diving in Hawaii:) Although I live on Maui and love the diving here, I like to check out the other islands. I have done the manta night dive on the Big Island several times and it is always cool. Look for the moray eel named George:) I have...

    new to diving

That is so true! My life changed when I became a diver. Soon everyone I associated with was a diver, both in my work environment and my social life. I was always a nightowl, but since the diving is best early in the day here on Maui, when I became a waterperson I started going to bed early...

    Good Dive Operations in Maui???

I am so pleased to read that you loved diving on my beloved Maui. I hope you can make it over to the Kihei side next time and get to dive with us at Maui Dreams. We have some wonderful dive sites on that side as well:) Did you get out to Molokini? The pristine water and coral are not to be...

Dumbest things you've seen a newbie diver do

When I was working through my Divemaster internship I assisted my Instructor (Don) with a night dive at Five Graves here on Maui. There were several divers in the group as well as the two of us. My job was to be the last one to descend and to stay in the rear of the group so that I could keep...

Dumbest things you've seen a newbie diver do

Wonderful! Enjoy your training and remember that the only "stupid question" is the "unasked question". Through your training experiences, and continuing after certifications, be sure to keep asking questions. I still talk with students I certified ten years ago! Remember to have fun through...

Well said! I completely agree with your analysis of what training should be:)

Dumbest things you've seen a newbie diver do

This is a great example of why you want to do a buddy check each and every dive, BEFORE you get in the water:) Sometimes, especially when I am on a boat, it is not convenient to do an actual BUDDY check. So I always perform one on myself, including breathing through my reg while watching my spg...

Dumbest things you've seen a newbie diver do

Okay, I did a similar thing with a camera and strobe! Never did recover my photography equipment! That was how I learned to attach it to me with clips and lanyards, so that if I get distracted and let go, I still have my expensive stuff:)

Dumbest things you've seen a newbie diver do

I completely agree. A few years ago I was on a boat in Fiji. A few of my companions were discussing negative entries. Unknown to them, one of the other passengers decided to try this on his own. Once he jumped in with out inflating his bcd, he did indeed start sinking like a rock. When he tried...

    Why dive Deep Air?

Honestly, I am not sure, but since I started working in the dive shop over ten years ago, I have had a number of divers from some of the more tech-oriented agencies, commercial, or the military share that information with me. I am unaware of who teaches 1.2 or 1.0. Wow, that's really...

    Why dive Deep Air?

The 218' thing has to do with exceeding 1.6 ATA of oxygen partial pressure while using air. Enriched air training teaches us that oxygen toxicity could occur above that ATA. However, some agencies use 1.6 ATA as a maximum depth with 1.8 ATA as a contingency depth. Oxygen toxicity can result...

    PADI Rec Encyclopedia

There are some excellent videos in the DVD version. I particularly like the one which shows how tanks are made:) However, I agree with the responder who said that it is easy to flip through the book, plus you can notate the margins. Althoug it is pricier, I would recommend getting both.

Padi advanced open water /enriched air specialty diver combination

I would say the insructor or the shop makes the price range different. I see vast differences between the various instructors and shops right here on Maui, regardless of which agency is used. Also, remember that many shops and instructors use several agencies. Go with the instructor or shop...
