    Whale watching?

We're going to be on Tahiti at the very end of October and Bora Bora in early November. We were looking for activities for non-diving days, and we saw that the humpback whales are in the area "into October". Are they usually still there at the end of October, or not? If we were to go whale...

Down Under Surf & Scuba is no more

What a loss to the North Carolina diving community! The Down Under Divers Club is continuing as an independent group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/downunderdivers/ From the Down Under Surf & Scuba Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Down-Under-Surf-Scuba/255587911745 To Our...

    Doing the math

Tatiana's thread got me thinking... Instead of theory, I'd like to base this on my own data... On a recent dive in the Atlantic ocean, we used AL 80s. The maximum depth was about 100 fsw. We started our ascent from the line at about 90 fsw. We're still pretty new divers, so our SAC rates are...

Aeolus and Ario/Hutton with Discovery Diving Co., August 9th

DH and I were excited to get back to the NC coast after a long time away in California. We decided to go with a full day offshore charter with Discovery Diving Company out of Beaufort, because we've been diving with them before and knew it was a good operation. The offshore weather report was...

    Thank you, Henderson...

...for making a wetsuit that actually fits me! Sure, I *can* wear a women's 18 (made for ladies closer to 5' 10" tall), or even a men's XL, but they both have arms and legs that are way too long. The Henderson W2 is a much better fit. There are so few manufacturers that make true plus sizes.

    Rescue Diver - completed!

Whoo, I finished my Rescue Diver class today! It was definitely a long day, and "serious fun". Also, Folsom Lake officially has the worst visibility I've ever seen. The visibility was from 0-4 feet all day. We had to hold on to each other under water, and sometimes we had to give signals...

How to adjust Zeagle Onyx to avoid free-flows?

I have a Zeagle Onyx regulator and second stage. The second stage breathes very easily, which is great, but it's too "touchy" for me. It free-flows on a regular basis: on the surface, when I remove it from my mouth underwater for any reason, etc. It can also be difficult to stop the...

Finally worked up the nerve to sign up for Rescue :-)

I just signed up for an hour of an instructor running me through each of my least-favorite skills several times, followed by a Rescue class later this month. Wish me luck! My least-favorite skills? Mask-off and regulator-out skills (exchanges, recoveries, free-flows). I ended up choking on a...

Getting water into ears while descending

Another thread inspired this question. While diving, I equalize quite often while descending. In fact, I'm usually one of the slowest to descend, because it takes me a couple of minutes to get through the first 20 feet or so. After that, equalizing gets easy. I've also learned to...

Is there a good place to take Rescue in warmer water?

I'd like to take Rescue, but the thought of spending a weekend shore diving in the cold Northern California ocean water *really* does not appeal to me. Sorry, I know everyone probably hates me now! I'm just a sissy about the cold water, and not a fan of the entries/exits in surf. Also, I'm...

Baby shampoo *is* the best defog

I guess I didn't believe people when they told me that Johnson's Baby Shampoo is the best defog. I thought, surely the commercial defog products must work better; otherwise, how would they make money on them? I've been using Sea Gold defog gel, but I still had foggy masks pretty often. People...

Random question about a beeping computer in surge

I have a random question. I was on the manta ray night dive a few weeks ago, off of Kona. The goal during this dive is to stay near the bottom, basically in one position, to watch the mantas. There was pretty significant surge, so once every couple of minutes we would have to kick or grab a...

Trip report: Oahu (Waikiki and Waimanae), May 8-9, Kaimana Divers

Drat, I had a typo in the thread title and can't fix it now. Waianae! Kaimana Divers: This is a smaller operation than most I dive with. Gabe, the owner, was excellent at communicating with me before and during our trip, so props for that. We really liked the instructors who were our guides...

Trip report: Kona, May 4-5, Jack's Diving Locker

Jack's Diving Locker, Kona: This is a first-rate operation. Nice shop, nice boats with plenty of room to move around and tasty snacks, helpful instructors and crew, excellent gear. My only feedback to them is that on both days we showed up right when they told us to, and had to wait around...

Asking for advice for GoPro settings for night dives and a few others

Hi all, We have two GoPro Hero 3 cameras - one Silver edition and one Black edition. My husband and I each plan to dive with one of them on our upcoming trip to Hawaii. My husband has used the Silver edition several times while diving, so he has a little more practice than I do. We were...

Georgia Aquarium Journey with Gentle Giants trip report

DH and I hadn't been able to dive for a few months, so when we decided to go to Atlanta over New Year's to meet up with some friends, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to dive in the Georgia Aquarium and get our diving fix. Yes, it is definitely the most expensive dive we'll ever do, but boy...

We'd love to hear some opinions on diving out of Kona and Ko' Olina.

Hi all, We're taking a trip to Hawaii in May, and we would appreciate a little advice to help us plan our dive sites. I've read quite a few of the threads on this forum, but I'm still a little lost. This is an 8-night trip where we're trying to make sure everyone in the family does a few...

We did it! 25 logged dives in our first year!

I've updated my stats - 25 dives in the log book! That was my goal for this year. My husband got a few more dives in than me, because he already took the Rescue class, and I passed on it for now. We had some divemaster candidates who really wanted to get their tour requirements checked off...

    I ordered a custom semi-dry suit!

I ordered a custom semi-dry suit from here: Custom Semi-Dry Wetsuits with Wrist Seals and Ankle Seals based on some good reviews here on the boards. I'm all excited to get a suit that fits, so I just had to share. Y'all are the only ones who would understand the excitement of ordering new...

What's the trick to the giant stride?

Hi all! Back from my travels... So, the last time I did a giant stride into the ocean, my tank hit the side of the boat, hard. Fortunately it didn't hit me, and the tank stayed in the bands, so I was able to continue my dive after a quick check to make sure everything was OK. It was scary...
