For the "big ticket" dives - Blue Corner, German Channel, Ulong Channel - where you are guarenteed sharks, big fish and exicting dives it can be pretty busy.

For the other dives - walls, drifts etc there are plenty to go around and often we didn't see another group at all. There is certainly no shortage of amazing dives in Palau, but the biggest attractions do get busy.

I'll describe the first dive I did on German Channel to whet your appetite - we waited until full moon to dive it as the currents are strongest then. Basically it is a channel blasted through shallow reef by the Germans a while ago, and it is very clearly visible from the surface. As such, there is a strong current feeding through the channel bringing nutrients from beyond.

The dive we did was to drop in to the current, stay at 5-10m at basically fin like crazy to stay next to a giant baitball and watch the fun.... it was a multi-level dive in that we had sharks feeding below us, tens of thousands of fish around us and manta's swooping to the side and above us. Although the current was strong the adrenaline kicked in and we stayed for 25 minutes finning away enjoying the most awesome dive of my life.

When you're too knackered to continue (or someone in your group is!) you stop and enjoy a drift along the shallow reefs along the channel, seeing many turtles, groups and even the occassional manta. We passed over a giant clam that must have been 6 foot long.

Here are some of the "singing" black snapper

and an indication of the sheer number of fish (that shadow in the background is fish, not a boat!)

The two manta photos above are from that dive too.

Some of the more curious oddities we found were a pink leaf fish (where do you find pink leaves?!) and a crocodilefish.. they have two of the more curious eyes I've seen - pink and freaky respectively!

Stop teasing!!!!!

seriously though. it looks fantastic - I'll go to osezaki this weekend and use my imagination to try and liken ose to palau....

if you were to head back to palau would you stay at a resort, or liveaboard?

Hi Mushroom,

I stayed Peleliu Island because I don't like long boat ride. It's around 5min to Peleliu corner and around 20min to blue corner.

Interesting - I didn't realise it was possible to stay on Peleliu. Are there many dive shops there? I think most of the big ones (Sams Tours, Fish n Fins, Neco Marine) are based in Koror...

What type of fish is that on the (I think?) gorgonian fan coral?

Beautiful pictures. Hmmm. Maybe next year!

Beautiful!!!!!!

Hi Geoff_H,

There are only two diving services available year-around in Peleliu. I asked Peleliu Divers this time but stayed Wenty-Inn which costs 20USD per night. If you stay there, you can dive both major diving sites of Peleliu and Koror state.
Actually I moved from Peleliu to Carp Island to stay for next 3 nights then moved to Koror for enkai.

You must have a good imagination! I recommend shutting your eyes if you are trying to liken Ose to Palau :) Mind you, with 2m viz it probably won't make a difference :)

I would happy stay in either a liveaboard or go shore based again. I am booked on the Aggressor next September... the dive sites are around an hour ride for most of the shore based operators, but the Rock Islands are very pretty so its not that much of a hardship.

The biggest advantage of a liveaboard should be the ability to get to the divesites before/after the crowds.. at least the first and last dives of the day should be less crowded than with the shore boats.

... and divers on liveaboards are often nicer and better divers! There are often big groups of not so experienced and skillful divers on daytrips. Important if you want to take good pictures like Nori!
