I don't understand this air fill argument. The main reason people will tell you to shop at an LDS is because of service. The number one thing they present to use is air fills, hell I can go to a local sporting goods store to get a fill for a few bucks.
You may be able to get a paintball fill at a sporting good store. You most likely can't get a SCUBA-grade air fill, unless the sporting goods store is also a SCUBA shop.

Same goes for the fire department. Air that's just fine for the FD when used at 1 ATA may or may not be OK at 3 or 4 ATA.

In the end, the entire argument is as useless as condemning internet porn. Eveybody says it's a terrible thing, but oddly enough it's one of the most profitible industries on the net.

If you like your LDS, use them. If you don't, use something else. The businesses that people like to use will thrive and the places that suck will close.

u so funny u love it long time. Silly I never meant an actual duel, but dual tanks to da bottom. Here be the rules, we both dive down with dual tanks whoever runs out of air first loses. This is the new honorable method fer solving disputes on da board.

Don't forget your secret "SpareAir"....

Sport Chalet out here does fills and I believe Nitrox. The staff in the scuba dept. are all divers and or instructors. My LDS went out of business which is sad. The problem was they would not stock much. The simplest of things would need to be back ordered. I also could save $100's by going on line. I feel for the LDS but I have been stuggling financially since 2000. My accounts decided it was cheaper to go over seas. I finally switched professions after 25 years.
I won't stop diving but I have to look out for my wallet just like the LDS.

Bring them down and you can run over to any of the local sporting goods store and get them filled. I'll fill mine myself, since I work at a LDS.:D Guess who will run out first.

Will the fire dept. do air fills for you?

and neither will Scott manufacturing. The company that makes Scott airpaks for the fire department. If you're a fireman they'll fill your tank but you must me a certified :fire: fireman and that is one heck of a course.

Under what circumstances would this apply?

When it has marginal levels of contaminants that are not a problem at 1ATA, but are when under pressure:

A small amount of CO2 in your tank can cause extreme narcosis and could kill you at depth. I don't know what kind of quality controls fire departments have, but it is a possibility.
