Hard to find work right now though, a better way to approach this board might be to tell us what you have tried so far for work as opposed to the system, loans and such.

Hello,
My name is Daniel, Im in college right now studing Sports Mangement Dive Industry with a minor in buissness. The is a problem I have encountered the overwhelming cost of doing this I love the major I love the instructors. The cost of the program last semester cost me 18200, i am still trying to figure out where to come up with the 2,794 dollars to pay my remaining balances. I have searched every knoock and crany of the web for Diver related scholarships they just dont really exist unless your a Gradute level student. I suppose becouse I am in the only on of its kind in the world At Barry University in Miami Florida. Ive maxed out goverment funding school scholarships my major dont quilify for most of the scholarships out there so that limits me down. I would be willing to work for a contract period of time after I Finish for a company for funding. If there is any ideas or ways to help please
LET ME KNOW!:idk:

Hi Daniel,

I understand your predicament. I graduated from Barry University's sister school, Marywood University, in 1993. One of my friends, Pete, is actually in the diving program there.

While coming up with $2,794.00 might seem easy to some, I know that with what you get paid at most "college kid" jobs isn't very good and it will take time to earn that working part-time. I would also imagine that after you were in the USMC the last thing you need is another low-paying job that demands a lot of work. Also, there is very little money in the fields that you are studying. In some ways, this may be the best thing that could have happened to you because you may be forced to think outside of the box.

The most obvious "college kid" job that might be beneficial to you would be to become a lifeguard. That was my college job. Summer is approaching and most lifeguard classes will be forming from now until Summer. You can take a YMCA, American Red Cross, or Ellis course and find yourself flex-time, part-time or full-time jobs. They'll be recruiting for surf lifeguard jobs all along the east coast of the United States, more or less, immediately. Pay can very between $7.00 and over $15.00 per hour. As a Marine, you can apply for jobs with the National Park Service lifeguards and your time in service will give you points ahead of many civilian youth looking to get a slot for the Summer. You may also develop some great contacts as a lifeguard who will be valuable after you graduate whether just getting access to a pool to teach diving or hooking you up with a career in sports, diving, or aquatics. Camp counselor and security jobs aren't bad either.

This may also be a time to become a self-starter with some entrepreneurial vision. This is where thinking outside the box, especially that sandbox you were playing in, might help. My dad was a marine so I know how easy it is to get used to a certain mindset that often accompanies military life where creativity is often depressed in favor of standard operating procedures and the slow-moving adaptations of the government. You obviously want to make money and make it quickly - and legally. Your survival in combat depends a lot on a team mindset, but survival in life can be more Darwinian. This may be an opportunity to discover the foundation for success in business and in life.

When a married couple lost their jobs in the D.C. area, they were a little perplexed about what to do since the careers in which they had been downsized weren't hiring. They started a dog pop scooping business and made far more money than they ever did as corporate professionals. I think they made a million dollars, if not close to it? Two former marine's started a "boot camp" workout business getting paid big bucks by corporate executives just to do morning P.T. with a group of execs. A college kid "start-up" business that succeeded was a safety/security business where college guys would escort girls across campus or when running errands. Maybe showcasing some basic self-defense moves you learned in the marines could make a few bucks? Ask student activities and security if you could host or co-host an event along those lines. Anyway, think of something that your campus might need and see if you could capitalize on it. What about offering to teach marine tactics to paintball teams? Just throwing off the cuff ideas at you.

What there are a lot of in your area are boats and what really sucks is cleaning them. You may get paid pretty decent money to work for a hull scrubbing company and at least you are underwater. Treasure Salvors, Inc. used to hire divers in Key West for $350 per week, but they wanted a year commitment. Maybe you could convince them to lat you work for a summer? There are companies that collect golf balls in water hazards. Maybe they need help? Dive shops don't just hire instructors and many hire employees that are just divers. Some pool companies hire divers for minor repairs and inspections. You often have to knock on a few doors and many diving jobs are just "right place - right time. I was offered a job in a Dallas, TX aquarium just by wearing a scuba T-shirt.

If you really are just looking for scholarship money, there are lots of strange ones out there, but researching them can be a full-time job in itself with no guarantees. There's a $2,000.00 scholarship given out by Zale Parry you may qualify for if you are interested in marine conservation or equipment technology. Keep searching and you may find something.

I don't know if this might help: http://www.beneaththesea.org/pdf/2010_Scholarship _Revised.pdf

Anyway, good luck!

Please don't take this as anything but another attempt to reach you on this subject, no offense to you is intended but it's hard to not sound harsh. If I might be so bold I think it's you who is missing the point. I don't say that to be mean or funny or make you feel bad, I actually think you ARE missing the point regarding your communications skills. You came here looking for help in trying to earn or raise funds for school and are scoffing ar the most important advice anyone here can offer you...Dude you NEED TO FIX THOSE LANGUAGE SKILLS if you want to get anywhere in life! This is a forum, that is true, however rather than that being an excuse for sloppy writing in this place what and how you write is absolutely and positively the only way anyone here can assess who you are. This is the universe of the written word, the fact that you write in a manner that produces nearly unreadable posts and then tell us that you can't be bothered writing clearly tells us that you don't take communication seriously. My friend, if you approached diving like you approach the english language then you would never have made it back up from your first check-out dive...it is THAT bad and you don't seem to care. Please listen to the very sincere advice that you have been given, don't tune this out like some kid with nagging parents...buckle down and learn proper grammar and vocabulary skills. It really is that big a deal in the real world, if your verbal communication comes off anything like your writing then it's going to be hard to get the break you are looking for.Again, I apologize for what must seem like everyone ganging up on you but all it really is is everyone trying to answer your question about how to find help.

I find critizing people on somthing you yourself are not perfect in is hypocritical so I figured id follow suit and do the same. Your corrected forum post thanks to my friend thats a english major :eyebrow:

Um, I can't find the corrections...must be pretty minor, anyway you certainly don't need to be perfect to give advice. But since you chose to ignore my opening and closing lines and take offense where none was intended I will leave you with this little anecdote and then bow out of the conversation...although I doubt you'll make the connection given that you clearly are not interested in learning how to improve yourself to increase your chances for success.

I started a band with a friend many years ago. This friend was the kind of guy who could not take criticism, not even well meant constructive criticism. After a few years he announced that he was leaving the band, his parting words were "Every band I have ever been in has eventually turned into a bunch of a**holes and I had to quit". He had been in a LOT of bands with a LOT of different people. I'm feeling a bit of Dejavu here.

I was in the Military already its paying for part of my school USMC CPL 6541.

There are specific ROTC programs for prior service members. Also try USAJobs.com, it is a good source for job opportunities.

Hello,....
If there is any ideas or ways to help please...

You’ve been given a lot of good advice-most of which you rejected because it did not fit into your tightly defined requirement of being basically free money.

Sometimes the answer to your question is ‘no’ and you need to adjust accordingly. I hope you go back and re-read the suggestions and see if you notice a trend.

Traceman I know pete hes a great guy and been my dive partner on multiple dives! Traceman have to say that was the best advice so far.

RJP all Walmart apps are computerized questions multiple choice. What you smart people with perfect English skills fail at is clearly the common sense of you never turn in anything your write the first time. You always have someone check over your work. Then you rewrite it, you Ass-ume that I would turn something that hasn't been proof read or checked. That leads me to believe that you are not a very intuitive thinker. I thought divers were supposed to be constantly assessing the situation? Well a lot of your assessments lead you to be mislead. By your first assumption that to leads you to the conclusion that this is how I always type. Shows about how critical your thinking is. I don't think I would hire anyone to do anything with diving if they couldn't critically think. Or in that matter be around them to dive there a danger to themselves and those around them. So before you start writing think things through. They are not always the way they seem. Its a forum not a resume, paper, or a application. LET'S GET BACK TO THE POINT HERE!

Ya, and being argumentative with people trying to help you (e.g. someone looking to hire you) is a huge red flag too. You obviously have some issues there buddy and until you get past them, you are going to struggle in life. [I turned this in on the first time and nobody proof-read it for me.]
