I can only assume there's two sizes of jam nuts possible

Bad picture - Is that a set screw? Maybe a pin-spanner hole to hold it?

Also, from what I have seen, it is a "thin wrench" to go in the recess between the hose nut and the part that is engraved.
There is supposed to be a nut ground in it there.

Is it possibly put together backwards, and that nut is inside the stage body?
 
There were probably 7 weird ones built. And they caught 6 of them before they left the factory. Congratulations.

It's the same direction as the Atomic picture I posted on page 1.
