My apologies to you and Lizzi.

No apologies... we're just having a conversation. :)

Yes, the risk/reward for domestic travel is usually considerably lower. Airfares are less and prepaid nonrefundable items are less common. Therefore, travel insurance is not as common.

I'm buying travel insurance for my son this summer. He's going to camp in Orlando, and the outlay is several thousand of non-refundable fees and tuition.

For most of my other domestic scuba vacations, I only purchase extra luggage insurance (very cheap) to help if my expensive scuba gear is lost or delayed in transit.

Summer camp! Now that's a creative use of travel insurance I had not thought of. I assume you have checked the fine print.

Not yet, but I will. Similar to DAN, the camp is endorsing the insurance. They claim it is compatible with and covers camp related expenses.

"Camp" is a term I use loosely. There's no camping involved. It's a summer educational thing for young filmmakers, run by the NY Film Academy. It's quite a big deal, and has had guest speakers like Stephen Spielberg, Ron Howard, and Al Pacino in the past.

They direct and produce a mini-film, using Disney property, fancy equipment, storyboards, and all that stuff. He better have fun, or else!!!!

Altamira, Sorry my mistake--I missed the "i." Yes for sure this exclusion should be at the top and in big bold letters so the divers that DAN caters to can't miss it. Who else but divers would have a DAN Travel Insurance policy?

For me, highlighting the exclusion is not good enough. I am not buying another DAN travel insurance policy until they delete the exclusion requiring certified divers to dive with a DM.

This tread made me read the UK version of Dan's insurance. This bit caught my eye:
19. Professional Diving means the provision of advice and instruction in snorkel and/or recreational diving including all organising, supervising, training, escorting or guiding services provided by diving instructors, assistant instructors or underwater guides including personal Recreational Diving Activity and work (both voluntary and remunerated) for civil protection agencies. Diving Activities directly or indirectly related to scientific, exploratory or media activities are also considered professional diving (unless purely voluntary without any form of remuneration or reward)
Which I take to mean if I'm acting as the lead of a buddy pair on a dive I organised myself (a lot of Brits do) I would not be covered. Just glad I don't use them.

Yes, that's one of the reasons BSAC and FFESSM (and other federations who rely more on club training and less on professional instructors) often endorse different insurance schemes. DAN is more suited to PADI-style diving.

[QUOTE
DAN has 3 plans for diving accident coverage, and for two of them there is no depth limit.[/QUOTE]

They may have 3 depth coverages but the discussion I was commenting to was an OW diver diving past the 132. not a tech250' diver.
