Another advantage is that you go through US customs (very quickly) on Aruba as you are leaving and don't have that hassle and long lines in a US airport hanging over your head.

Which is fine if you're American. Heehee

Well, pedantically, it's fine if you're going to America. Doesn't matter at all where you're from originally!

Non-Americans are not that crazy about transitting through the US, that's all I meant. Further, we have to go through immigration again.

Oh yeah if you're in transit then it's clearly objectively worse. I'm non-American and my final destination was in the USA, so clearing immigration in Aruba worked out very well.

I'll throw in my 2 cents since I've only been to one tropical place diving-- Portobelo, Panama (Caribbean side). With Panama Divers.
Fish--OK
Coral, quite good.
Costs--$100 US for 2 tank boat dive, DM lead.$50 per shore dive as you must have a DM.
$60 per night at their "motel"--Octopus Gardens--café there (burgers, fish, etc.)
This was in 2011.
They picked me up at P.C. Airport and used to do a day trip to the Pacific side--not that year.
