Solitude Diver:
…had the “Devil Line” :D reach out and grab my splits inside a wreck, in low visibility. It was very tight in the area, and by the time I was untangled it was 0 visibility.

I should probably mention…. that in the end, the “Devil Line” and I became very good friends. :D

Only after you forced it into submission, right? Once it knows who is boss, it will behave

Bobby F:
It has been scientifically proven that the vortex from split fins will suck any and all line into them and trap the diver for a long sure death. They must not be used in any type of technical situation for this reason.

Bobby

I nearly met a sure death after my first cave dive with split fins . . . but it wasn't from the line . . . it was from the vortex created WHILE FROG KICKING that stirred up the silt on the bottom . . . and the other cave divers in the tunnel at the time who threatened to kill me if I kept using those fins in the cave. I borrowed a pair of Jets (or Turtles, don't remember) for the next dive and the problem was solved . . . and I never used them in any type of technical situation since.

Still like the splits for rec OW diving, though. :)

double80s:
Especially as you approach the exit at Devil's. The line almost reels it's self back on!

Or like JB when the flow is kickin!

A friend of mine who is an avid and somewhat accomplished cave diver and explorer was argueing with me that split fins worked just fine for him. At the time he was diving mostly Kentucky sumps where you have to tunnel through the my feeling your way with your hands. He hadn't been to Florida since he started using the splits. On his next trip to Florida I think he used those splits for like 2 dives and I haven't heard him mention splits since and I sure haven't seen him diving in them.

the moral of the story is that silt is no problem if you can't see it.
