OK I give up. I got the new HD icon AI and downloaded the Dive Organizer 2.8. I can't connect the dive computer to the PC. It seems to be missing the driver so when I plug in the USB cable it just charges and does not connect.

I tried Computer, Interface Settings but I can't activate the HD Icon Driver. I get caught in an endless look of trying to activate the driver, the program says it's activated, then says I need to activate it.

I tried on two different computers: one an XP and the other Vista.

Am I a moron or is the programmer?

There is not a word in the manual about connecting the thing to your PC. Frustrating after paying $1500 for a dive computer.

The same thing happened to me when I first got the non-AI ICON HD. I had to work at it for a while until I got the connection. Here is what I found worked.

Launch Dive Organizer. Make sure you connect firmly the adapter to the 4 pin connection on the ICON. Make sure this is a tight connection. Without tight connect, it will only charge. Attach the USB cable to the ICON connector ONLY. Then connect USB cable to the PC. Should then find the USB device (ICON). Verify by going to START ---> DEVICES AND CONNECTORS. You should see the ICON as a device. At that point you should get access to the ICON by way of the computer. Make sure all the connectors are clean ICON and connector. Alcohol works well to clean them. Hope this helps.

Thanks. You were right, after I cleaned the terminals Windows installed the driver.

Now I have a new problem. Every time I plug in the Icon a Window pops up from Dive Organizer: New Computer and asks me for the computer name, if I enter Mares Icon HD it complains that it's a duplicate name. What is it that it wants? If I enter something else it also gives an error message. If I close this window it tells me to disconnect the computer.

Did that to me as well. Launch dive organizer again. Reconnect the DC. It should prompt you again for the name. I put in Mares Icon HD Net Ready. I took it. It will give you an error if the name is too long. Inside dive organizer you will now see the old computer and the new one. Hope that helps.

That still does not work for me. Oddly if I put in some any garbage name like "a", it gives an error message, but then when I click on the check mark the window gets dismissed and the program seems to work.

I called Mares tech support and they said to have the dealer (Scubatoys) send it in, which is a ridiculous suggestion. If I send it in it will be for a refund. If I get fed up with this I'll just return this computer and get a Sol. I hope this computer does not turn out to be another Fix It Again Tony FIAT.

It is your DC computer so you can do what you like but I would not give up so easily.. It is a good dive computer but the problem sounds like it is in Dive Organizer not the Icon HD. I would wait until the next release.

I agree with you, the display is nice and I like night diving so I'd like to stay with this computer. However I will not dive with it until this is resolved as I have 30 days to return for refund if it's not used. I gave Zak my contact information and will give this about 2 weeks to resolve. I can't believe that I'm the only one having basic connection issues.

I am having the same issue. I have the latest firmware and the latest version of Dive Organizer. I find it a real pain to have to rename. If you don't give it a name it doesn't see the unit and you can't download dive. When you do rename it - that only seems to work in downloading dives mode - it sees all of the dives as new. I agree though, I think it is a function of the Dive software and not the Icon itself. I'm really hoping they fix this. I have sent an email to tech support to see about an answer. I'm not returning the Icon though even if they don't have a fix right away. I've had several dive computers and I like this one the best so far.

Let me know if you make any progress on this issue, as I've had no response from Mares tech support.

You guys are great! I was stuck in the driver loop. Read this thread, cleaned the contacts and it worked! Just in case it helps anyone here, I named mine Icon HD, and it worked. I typed the name in just like I typed it here Icon (space) HD. Thanks for the help.
