Genesis once bubbled...
Its one of the Florida-specific sites with a diving section, allegedly from someone who knows the operator of the boat involved.

I don't know how valid the data is, but it would be very useful to find out if this is indeed what happened.

PM me the site URL, I'll try to check it out.

I came across this update.

Subject: S.FL. accident 3/2003

Very experienced and locally respected technical instructor and student in technical course are increasingly diving deeper wrecks along S. Florida. Warm weather, 2-4' seas maximum. Today is one dive among many in a series now to 200', last several dives were to 170'. ?? Dive gases trimix 18/45, deco gases ?? 40% nitrox and ?? 80%. Student weighs under 100 lbs and uses ?? 80 cu ft doubles [ or less] with 30-40 cuft deco bottles. Unknown whether steel or Al. Instructor has been filling tanks. 3 divers on boat.

Uneventful entry and 30 min bottom time at 200' to the sand. Instructor states a current on the wreck and some work was needed to swim around.

No issues on ascent to first deco stop.

During deep deco student breathes own deco gas for a few breaths, complains and switches to backgas.

Instructor test breathes student gas, and requests student breath same. Student tightens jaw, then looses consciousness.

Instructor notes student was not breathing, punches stomach of student to vent gas, and swims from 70-80' to the surface in ~1 minute, signals and shouts to boat. Captain quickly approaches divers, realizes blown deco, reaches down unable to pull student up or remove gear, Captain requests instructor to tie self or hold on to boat while he pulls student onto boat ... captain fears instructor would loose consciousness soon. Instructor
attaches self to boat. Student is pulled into boat via manifold by
Captain, clears student's airway, notes froth and foam on students mouth, and spontaneous agonal respirations. Captain assists instructor onto boat. Student begins to breathe deeper and spontaneously, remains unconscious, placed on DAN 02, instructor on 02 via regulator on deco bottle. Student vital signs are assessed, 02 continued, breathing continues. Captain maydays or pan-pan medico and begins for nearest
port. Captain estimates ~5 minutes elapses from retrieving divers and begin heading to port. Coast Guard instructs closest port. Instructor is without signs of DCI. Captain radios boats in area to retrieve third diver.

Captain reaches nearest port in 30 minutes, and student is airlifted to ??? and received 7 chamber treatments. Has residual weakness or paralysis but has no mental deficits after ~ 1 week in hospital.

Instructor was taken to hospital via ambulance, and arrives at hospital over 1 hour since pulled from water and is still without
symptoms. Instructor receives 2 recompressions. He is reportedly without problems.

Third diver was retrieved by fishing boat without issues.

Gear was initially impounded by police and recently returned to divers. No comments on gas impurities or problems with equipment.

Comments: Deco planned for ~ 40 min was missed;
unclear why student lost consciousness, no further information at this time; no detailed info at this time on gases or profile; gases were identical for both student and instructor; without deco, student and instructor ascended allegedly at 70-80 fpm
without loss of consciousness on instructor's part;
student was without air for under 5 minutes and was breathing spontaneously on surfacing; quick action by captain: clearing airway and 02 within 5 minutes to student; stomach punch minimized or eliminated barotrauma of ascent; captain maximized time for return to port and had knowledge that other boats would pick up third diver

I was told by an instructor NOT to punch divers in the stomach. Something to do with causing an A.G.E.

-----------------------------------------
Common name: Woodland Troll
Scientific name: Trollus Useneticus
sub-species: Dejadotcomus
-----------------------------------------

############################################################
# #
# PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: #
# #
# The common woodland troll (Trollus Useneticus) is an #
# approximately 1.7m long nocturnal furry creature that #
# has been found to exist in nearly every climate and #
# latitude. Predominant features include: a very pale #
# complexion, a large bony ridge above the eyes, a dense #
# cranium, dragging knuckles, and a pungent odor. #
# #
############################################################

############################################################
# #
# HABITAT: #
# #
# Most trolls spend the daylight hours under a large rock #
# sleeping. Unfortunately, the natural habitat of the #
# troll has been encroached by development (as is all too #
# often the case). The modern troll has to make due with #
# a slimy, moss covered rock. Often, trolls are forced #
# to endure poor sanitation and filthy living conditions. #
# Combined with the general lack of hygiene among trolls, #
# this results in a very unpleasant odor. #
# #
############################################################

############################################################
# #
# ACTIVITIES AND DIET: #
# #
# During their active period at night, the common troll #
# engages in numerous activities, though the most #
# important of these is foraging for food. The one #
# characteristic that ties all different troll species #
# and sub-species together is their diet. Trolls #
# invariably survive off of a combination of cheetohs, #
# arguments, and annoying others. A typical troll #
# requires approximately 10 arguments and flames per day #
# just to stay alive. With the increasing use of #
# killfiles and just regular ignoring of trolls, it has #
# become more and more difficult for trolls to eke out a #
# basic sustenance. #
# #
############################################################

############################################################
# #
# KNOWN PREDATORS: #
# #
# Unfortunately, trolls have many predators. Most common #
# among them are the helpful researcher, the informative #
# poster, the cool headed responder, and the kill-filer. #
# The cool header responder is technically not a troll #
# predator however. Trolls are typically unfazed by #
# logical counter arguments and cool headed reason. #
# However, even though their posts do not deliver the #
# same level of sustenance that a "flamer" or an "annoyed #
# poster" may provide, they still provide a valuable #
# source of dietary fiber for the troll. #
# #
# The most dangerous predators for the trolls are the #
# helpful researcher, the informative poster, and the #
# kill-filer. The common troll is highly allergic to #
# fact, real data, and research. Upon skin contact with #
# actual hard evidence and real data, the troll will #
# experience intense itching and burning at the site of #
# contact, followed by lesions and blisters. Eventually, #
# this results in loss of skin near the area of contact, #
# and usually to loss of a limb (in the example of #
# contact near the arm or leg). Contact with facts and #
# data near the facial area usually results in a slow #
# painful death. Contact with extremely high doses of #
# fact and hard data can cause temporary loss of #
# consciousness and even permanent brain damage for the #
# troll. #
# #
# The kill-filer poses a much more insidious threat to #
# the troll. Not posing a direct threat to the troll per #
# se, the kill-filer simply deprives the troll of yet #
# another source of nourishment. Some trolls have #
# developed counter measures to thwart the kill-filers, #
# usually this takes the form of a type of camoflage. #
# #
# The trolls' predators have reaped a terrible slaughter #
# over the years, resulting in the death of great hordes #
# of trolls. Trolls continue to breed rapidly though and #
# their population is stable. However, it is unknown how #
# long this situation can persists. Eventually, natural #
# predators and poachers may result in lower numbers of #
# trolls. Already we are seeing lower diversity among #
# the different troll species. That is why this troll #
# habitat refuge exists, to ensure the preservation of #
# the troll for not only our future, but the future of #
# our children. #

What's an A.G.E.?

Marc

Thats a first one for me... punching someone in the stomach can give them an AGE??? I can think of other reasons to NOT puh=nch them in the stomach, but I can't think of any reason I would like to. Did I miss something?

Raviepoo, heehhehehe

Life under the bridge is slow, work is slow, traffic was slow..then again fast traffic would be an oxymoron.

speaking of moron, yep thats me, your resident troll who sometimes says he isnt a troll, but it will always be inside me...its only natural.

However, my above post was soo obviously a troll it wasnt much fun..
