Indeed, this is a functional skill. There's no need to know how to back kick in order to do it. If one puts artificial pressures on oneself like needing to remain horizontal and not move more than 1 foot up or down in the water column it's going to be a hard one to practice.
The notion of cheating is an artificial construct as well. It's not a contest and you aren't being graded, you're just recovering from a need to remove your rig underwater. Keep it real.

In another thread, the question of what I would change if reorienting a certain agency towards rec only diving came up. The notion that one need not be functionally proficient in a skill because one has a teammate would be one of them. Imagining that a teammate will always be there, able to assist, at the particular moment help is needed is creating a failure point IMO. A diver should be able to act independently no matter what and bring that skill set to the team environment. At the recreational level, a diver should be able to perform all skills necessary to diving by themselves or reassess the equipment/dives they are using/doing.
