I get dry mouth like most on a long dive, would there be any harm in carring a bladder type water bottle and take a drink at depth? Or maybe just to rinse any salt taste out of my mouth.

Just suck on a few ticktacs or hard candy before the dive and you'll salivate enough to help with the problem..

i would like to know the same thing, and possibly the technique to do so.. trying to imagine taking a gulp of water 200' down :D

Nova, i basically swallow a few times when i get dry mouth, and it
takes care of it

i know the mermaids at Weeki Wachee drink under water (yes, highly
scientific source, i know). i read somewhere that they have to "exhale"
into the bottle to force the water into their mouths.

I assume we're talking water here, I believe theres a product called scuda self contained underwater drinking apparatus. I've never used it nor have i ever known anyone that has. Whether its safe to drink underwater I'm not quite sure. I'd think that you'd want to be as upright as possible so you don't choke. I believe this particular system uses a special mouthpiece that mates to your reg and then a small tube goes to this small(12oz) camel back type pouch.
Check out there web site for more info: www.scuda.com

yeah Tobin I had seen that pack on DSS, i just wasnt sure if maybe it was for use in air pockets or what not. well ill have to try it some time. one advantage to diving springs is they are fresh and you dont need a straw :D

Hi Nova SS,

In addition to staying very well hydrated, here's a number of other steps you may wish to consider:

1. Purchase a reg with "moisturizing fins" in the second stage, such as the Oasis & Blizzard made by Sherwood http://www.sherwoodscuba.com/regulators.html .

2. Purchase the Apollo reg which has a "moisturizing chamber" into which you place a small, damp sponge; or get one of Apollo's in-line Bio-Filter mositurizers http://www.apollosportsusa.com/Products/Regulators/index.htm. IMHO, this probably is not worth the considerable expense and is another failure point in the gas delivery system.

3. Purchase a "Scuda" or "Camel-back," nifty little diver's canteens which allow you a squirt of fresh water when you want it http://www.scuda.com .

4. Tickle the roof of your mouth with your tongue, or run it along your teeth, as this will trigger salivation.

5. Rub a very small bit of toothpaste onto your mouthpiece prior to entry.

6. Contact Laclede's (800-922-5856) for free sample packs of their artificial saliva products, which I hear are quite good.

What you do not wish to do is enter the water with anything in your mouth that could be aspirated, e.g., hard candies.

Best regards,

DocVikingo

hey doc, about that apollo... is there any extra risk in adding something like this to a tech rig setup?(yeah pretty sure it's not DIR  so besides that)
