Great concept. Just to refine it a little farther consider substituting the log for one of these:

Any bets on what percentage of 'em will try to get close and poke it with a "no way this can be for reelz" stick?
 
Makes you have to think "What else is there that would scare boats away"? Countless items I presume.
 
If it's a real concern where you dive I would consider a simple crab pot buoy. Most boaters know what they are and to stay away.
I was gunna say same for lobster pot buoy, except that everyone here knows when the 2 month season is and one out of season would attract attention. Don't know about crabbing regarding any season or not.
