hammerheads at sipadan

When I was working at Sipidan/Mabul in 2008, a customer took it upon himself to leave the group and bounce dive down below 50m to look for the hammerheads. He was banned from all further diving with that dive centre....

Andy funny enough I heard about this story when I was at SWV early 2009, wondering if it was the same guy. Imagine going all the way to Sipadan and getting banned...

Back in the day (till 2004) when there used to be dive operators on Sipadan itself, this was a poplar dive. Experienced DMs knew exactly when these allusive creatures would come around just by the current and water temp. Now that there are no longer resorts on the island, many of the newer DMs don't know how to tell when they'll be around, so it's a hit or miss. Mostly miss.

I was privileged to be able to see these amazing creatures about 35m down off of the Drop-Off on one of my many dives. My DM, Jefrey, knew exactly where to find them the instant he hit the water. It was the most epic dive ever for me. If you want to find Jefrey, he's an excellent DM that works for Borneo Global Backpackers (Semporna). There is absolutely no guarantee that you'll be able to see the hammerheads, but it's always exciting to see if you will!

I once had a DM disappear off after a hammerhead at Sipadan. It was the only time I thought he was an idiot because most of the rest of the group hurried after him...

has anybody been on this dive? from what ive heard your in the water by 5am (ish )descend to about 50m and wait..

is this dive still happenening? have any been seen?

i have read about sightings but no recent posts all around 2002-2006.

Hi, i just dived in mid reef last saturday. The DM and instructors told us sometimes we get to see the hammerheads, but i didn't. But also i was just a newbie diving at 18m. :blinking: but i think there's still hammerheads around.

I don't know about hammerheads, but if you're looking for a real off-the-wall (or more correctly: in the wall) experience in Sipidan, try the cave dive that's 20M down the wall in front of Sipidan. It's the scariest thing I've ever done, and I've been diving for 48 yrs. I can give you more details if you're interested.
