Adm. Linda has a Versa Pro in a console. It's due for a new battery,
but I can't figure out how to get the computer out of the console
to get at the battery hatch on the back. This console has the
SPG behind the computer, and the compass on the same side as the
computer. (I've also seen one where the compass is behind the SPG).

Lotsa luck...I just give it to Robbie at my LDS...he cracks it out in seconds

hot water bath to make the console softer easier work. Remove the other gauges if pop the spg or compass if needed

Your console might require a different technique, but usually all you have to do is to pull back part of the upper lip a bit and tilt the computer. The computer is a bit larger diameter than the top lip of the spot for it on the console. The trick is to get just a tiny bit of the computer top edge past the lip of the console. Once you are able to tilt the computer while pulling back a section of the lip and get that first little bit exposed, the rest will pop out easily. This all assumes that you can press on the back of your console to force the computer module upward. If another gauge is in the way, then it will probably have to be taken out first.

It's far more difficult to describe than to do.

Yes, it's A console with the metal frame and is a PITA. There's another
console I've seen that has the compass behind the SPG that also has
a metal frame, but may be easier because you can MAYBE get to
the back of the Versa Pro.

I don't have it apart yet, though I've tried the butter knife and the
small flat-bladed screwdriver.

Maybe some silicon spray and two small screwdrivers? Got a photo there Mr. fancy camera?
