Speaking from personal experience of being hauled into Canadian Customs due to an unauthorized border intrusion/violation while diving, yes, you need to know exactly where that darn line is drawn through the middle of the St. Lawrence Seaway! I wish it was as easy as "look for the brown water!".
 
Inside joke with Steve (Doppler) and I from last summer. We had parted from the customs to head back out and dive. Somebody asked how the captain knew what waters were Canadian and what were USA. Being the smart@$$ that I am I said that the Canadian waters were brown. Steve proceeded to strangle me.
