We've all had these conversations, right? Trying to show our friends and relatives what a great sport scuba diving is, and all of us meeting the same ridiculous resistance.

"Oh, scuba diving! I would never do that because _________________________________"

I'm afraid I'll get eaten by a shark!

Your turn..

I'm putting the bounty on one particular answer. Hint- it could probably never happen in real life but it's the stuff folklore is made of...

The primal fear of drowning, claustrophobia, shark anxiety.

Less than one tenth of one percent of the general population become divers.

We are on a water planet and it is a privilege to explore it.

I feel very fortunate that I have been diving for over 45 years and still able to do so.

Getting accidentally swallowed by a whale. Yes I have had someone give me that reason for why they don't dive.

Also afraid of Giant Squid, Octopus and sharks as you already mentioned so basically any marine life.

I know mine was fear of claustrophobia. Who knew that the most free I feel is when I'm diving.

I kick myself for waiting as long as I did. The Graveyard of the Atlantic is in my back yard. I feel very privileged that I don't have to travel to dive

But I've heard sharks, too expensive, fear of drowning, etc

Claustrophobia is what I hear most of the time, and I tell them, agoraphobia, fear of wide open spaces , or even fear of heights is more applicable. The other is that they imagine it would be hard to breath, because they don't kow how easy breathing from tanks is.
I have held two "Try-Scuba" scuba birthday parties for my two kids, but did not get anyone else to take the full class.

@idocsteve, love the avatar clip!

I have also heard that it is too expensive. I know people that would love to dive yet the cost is the only thing keeping them from diving.

HAHA my favorite is number 6!! Well done sir!

My sons response when I asked him this question -

"I have nightmares because of you about those giant floppy fkrs suffocating me while I'm sleeping"

Further questioning lead to working out giant floppies were manta rays.

My fault because there was a video of me being buzzed by mantas I showed him when he was a child.

I want DNA testing done, pretty sure I ain't his baby mama
