I use HOG D1 cold first and second. Why do I use these? they are great regs, no problems in cold and freezing water. My buddies with ScubaPro regs are always having problems with free flows. Before I started using HOG's I had a Sherwood Oasis (the warm water cousin of the Blizzard) and never had any problems.

I use Poseidon XStreams I have never seen one freeze up and free flow during ice diving. That is just my own personal experience though.

Anoter vote for the performance of the Mares Abyss and I do not own one (my GF does) but I have ssen them in action in such conditions as long as the first breath or use of power inflator is done only once submerged. Many folks used them around here.

I have used Zeagle Flathead VI with great success for ice diving and I also own CW HOG D2 regs which have performed flawlessly in very cold water diving conditions similar to ice diving.

Scubapro Mk 17 G250V.

I use the same ones that I use for everything else. I have a ScubaPro Mk17/R395 on the primary and an Apeks DST/Oceanic Omega on the backup. Why? they are just what I have ended up with over the years. Wife has a Mk17/R395 primary and a Dacor Viper Tec (now Mares) backup. The Dacor is the only regulator we own that is one I wouldn't recommend. We both favour the side exhaust backups as they are small and neatly fit under the chin when out of use. Sadly the Oceanic 2nd is obsolete now and you can only get pattern parts for it not original Oceanic stuff. (As a result you can sometimes get them very cheap on ebay - which is great)

There are a number of "specialist" cold water regs but in my experience any decent regulator will cope with cold down to about 4C (39F) Most cold induced freeflows are overworking the regulator. Oddly enough other people that report freeflows in cold freshwater dives here in winter tend to be high performance regs. In particular the Mk25. The "standard" advice given seems to be to de-tune it. This seems kind of dumb to me - to buy a high performance reg then have to de-tune it to get it to work properly. My budget has never stretched to a Mk25 and in 25 years diving I've never had a freeflow....
