Hi, will be in Roatan for a week beginning 17 March. Will be staying at AKR. What sort of water temps. should I expect? I'm assuming a 3mm shorty will be ok.

thanks

79-82... here's a weekly log: http://www.docksidedivecenter.com/WeeklyLog.html

There's no way for anyone other than you to know if any given amount of thermal protection will suffice.

I use a bathing suit, my dive buddy uses a 5/7. You'll have to figure this one out with experince.

After getting a couple of coral scrapes on my second dive last year, I went and bought a 3mm full suit. Really glad I did. Plus, while diving in rain the last couple of days here in Roatan, after the dive everyone in a shorty was freezing their asses off; while I was quite comfortable in my full suit.

Like Roatanman says, it really varies. From what I've seen, skinny people get cold easier. I met a few really skinny DMs who wear 5mm full suits in the tropics. Women tend to get cold easier too. I'm 6'2'', 193 lbs and 3mm works great.

I've got a funny tan though - face, neck and hands :)

Just got back from Roatan a couple of days ago; saw everything from board shorts/rash guard combos to 3mm full. Surface temps were 78-80 degrees. I like my 3mm full for exposure protection and the occasional wreck penetration. I've never been too warm in the caribbean.
